When The Rubbers Hit the Road: Porn Flees L.A.

As the film community battles to keep Hollywood close to home, another local industry – adult entertainment -- is fleeing Los Angeles.

The number of permits issued for adult productions has plummeted since November 2012, when voters approved a measure that requires performers to wear condoms on sets.
Last year, 40 permits were issued for X-rated productions in the city and county, down about 90% from the estimated number of permits issued in 2012. And through July of this year, only 20 permits have been issued for adult productions.
And to think, the people that voted for this thought the porn industry didn't know when to pull out.
I'm astonished they didn't see this result cumming. Now they're complaining because this has become a financial hot mess.
And best of all, it was passed by the very people that their industry adheres to like sticky sheets; if conservatives had done this, they'd have hollered "Rape!"
But for residents there who don't mind that it's no longer the San Pornando Valley, there's a happy ending: what goes to Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Vegas makes sense as it's already an adult playground, but why Scottsdale? Nearest closest metro area?

My guess? Taxes. It's a large metro area in a state with much lower taxes.

I think also a fair bit of the Porn industry is going to Florida. Note that all three are "warm weather" states, which means outdoor filming is possible the entire year, or close to it.

Apparently, the HQ offices may be there, but that's changing, and their former warehouse studios are going on the For Sale Or Lease block by the dozens.
The HQ offices are making pretty serious noises about getting out of CA too. There's literally nothing in SoCal or CA they need.

I just thought it was funny to note that socialist do-good nannyism is literally helping them out of business and out of state in droves.

CByrneIV wrote:Yup, lower tax state, better legal climate, lots of sets available at low cost. Florida as well.

Most major contract porn for the last 20 years has been filmed in "luxury homes" (frequently the homes of the director, producer, or company owner... who are often the same person). Vegas, the Phoenix metro area, and south and central Florida; all have lots of what were very high dollar luxury homes during the boom, now selling or leasing for a fraction of their former prices.

Finally, all three have a ridiculous surplus of hot young women, already used to wearing very little clothing, with otherwise poor economic prospects, who are not just willing but actively jump at the chance to be in porn.
Which reminds me of the joke about Tommy Flanagan. He feels guilty about carrying on with a married woman, so he decides he needs to go to Confession.
"Father, bless me, for I have sinned. I've been having an affair with a married woman."
And the priest asks him "Was it with Mrs. O'Reilly?"
And Tommy says "No."
So the priest asks him "Was it with Mrs. Shaugnessy?"
And Tommy says "No" again.
And the priest says was it with Mrs. O'Brien?"
and Tommy says "No! I've changed my mind, and I'm not tellin' you!" And he walks out.
Outside he meets his friend Pat, who asks him "Did you confess to the priest?"
And Tommy says, "No, but he gave me three new leads!"

Sometimes it's even the star - Crackle has/had a series about the behind the scenes real life of a porn star with teenaged children, one of whom mentions the frequent filming that goes on in their home.. The house is very upscale - I'm guessing she can afford to do it as several other, younger porn stars also live there.

Well sure, when you're paid $1000 an hour (and guys usually get paid 1/10th of that simply because there's no shortage of guys willing to work in this industry)!!

It rarely pays enough to make a living, which is why most of the female talent is on the road hitting the stripper pole and lap dance circuit, which is where the money is.
