Native American/Indian Studies Question

I'd say "avoid the politically correct" in both directions. For everyone talking about how Native Americans originally came from other continents X-thousands of years ago, there's a plethora of people trying to make white people feel better about themselves.

I've read some good histories of the French & Indian War that dealt honestly with the different tribes.

We tend to buy into the Noble Doomed Savage guilt-fest. The F&I War shows a different light...one in which the Iroquoi were every bit as skilled in trying to get what they wanted as any European. Worthy rivals, not helpless 'innocents'.

Poor Iroquoi. From what I've read they were quite sophisticated and civilized. One wonders how things would have played out if they hadn't suffered the fate of outsiders caught in the middle of a violent family struggle, during the Revolution.

People say the Iroquois and think one tribe. It was the Iroquois Nation, a collection related tribes.
Oral tradition has it that they formed the Nation because they were killing each other off at too great a rate and needed to unite against other enemies.

As stated, your best bet is to hit an old library that still has anthropological studies predating the late 1960s. You might learn that "hostile" and "friendly" labels on tribes had nothing to do with their attitudes toward White men but their attitude toward anybody not in the tribe and trespassing on "their" grounds.

The "rites of passage" from childhood to manhood amongts the different tribes could be quite savage and make the Sun Ceremonies of various plains tribes look like a walk in the park. One of the woodland tribes (brain fart) would give an adolescent a knife and tell him to beat feet. If any of the adult members found him while he was in the exile period they would try to kill him. It is recorded that the tribe had a low incidence of men who snored.

'Course, then there's the part about the "principles" being a straight-up plagiarism of Marx...

So... Just to recap, this "ancient" "African" "festival" was invented by a murderer in a US prison in the late '60s.

Since "festival" is at least arguable, it can't be considered a TOTAL lie...
