Wildfires are the bug out wild card for us. Otherwise it's bug-in. Tom and Mike are welcome to come camp out and join the watchstanding rotation. Got a good defensible position and mostly good neighbors (including a retired Marine Major) who will collaborate on security. Am on a septic and have 3 RV sites w/ dumps set up on the lot.

Bugging in for me. There are very few scenarios that would require me to leave. I guess San Onofre could leak and the wind could be blowing due South, but the wind never blows due South. No major chemical facilities near me, or specifically, to the West of me. Large highly damaging Earthquakes are exceedingly rare in SD.

I have enough food and water to last about 4 months if necessary. But I have roommates, so call it about 1 month. Or maybe they'll be my 1st casualties, then I'm back up to 4 months.

If I had to bug out, I have no idea where I would go. If something happened that caused me to leave, most of my family would be affected as well & we're all in SD except my Dad, but Austin is a Hell of a long way for a bugout to his place.

So, I pretty much have to Stand pat.

Wildfires would have to burn through 100 houses in any direction to get to my house. I'm smack dab in the middle of Mira Mesa.

But if something happened to make me bug out that somehow didn't effect you, maybe I'll come join you. I'll bring everything I need for a coupld months, and enough firepower to outfit a dozen people or more.

Bring those roommates. Them's some good eatin'!

100 houses sounds like a lot until you recollect the 1985 Normal Heights fire.

Good point. 1's pretty lean, but the other 2 have decent fat reserves. None of them can shoot for shit, so they really aren't worth keeping around...although the girl is good with gardening. Oh yeah, and she's a girl, so there might be other uses for her.

With 4 kids under 6 we'll bunker in. I've got an entire wall of the basement stacked floor to ceiling with provisions, a creek in my backyard, a large wood pile, and a regular complement of passing wildlife on which to feed. I reckon that, with a little Providence, we'd weather a good six months.

If needed, the plan is to bug out towards family in Illinois/Iowa. Worse comes to worse, E&E Southwest towards Texas.

Mud-Dog, you got a secure waypoint to rest up about 4 hours (normal travel) South on I-75 if necessary.
I appreciate your kind offer, though it's a bit further out of the way than I would likely plan to take.

I will stay put when I finally get to my place in Washington state. I will be retiring in 7 days gang- cannot wait to go. Finally leaving this banana republic Kalifornia.
Anyway, staying put the best option for many reasons. If you are traveling, you would be road kill by someone with a simple 22 rifle. I like the fact of making one's place secure, stocked with food, have emergency power, and a knoweledge of the area. All good things.
