That brings back quite a few memories. Except we didn't have a jungle deck. We were open to all the crap that Diety felt like flinging at us, up to and including the fish.

What I never got from the still photos of an UNREP was the dynamism of the drill. I was always taken by the sense of speed you didn't normally have looking out to sea. The water between the ships looked like a flooded river rushing through a gorge. Throw a small boy in the mix simultaneously unrep'ing on the other side of the supply ship and it's one great show.

Then the Breakaway call over the 5MC followed by "Tie Me Wallaby Down Mate" (that got replaced by Lee Greenwood around '87). Wonder what song they play now on breakaway.

We played George Thorogood's Bad to the Bone. The JFK played The William Tell Overture in the early to mid 90's. Seeing as how our c.o., Capt. E.J. Fahy, became RADM E.J. Fahy of the USS JFK, I suspect their breakaway song may have changed.

Edited to add- that rushing river is moving at 14 kts.

we prefer our airfields to be stationary.
As someone that has only ever been a passenger in a jet, I would have to vote for non-moving runways as well.

Seriously, I wonder what it would look like, looking down over the fantail during flight ops in moderate seas.
You don't see it so much as you feel it. The ultimate rock concert.

I always liked rough seas. I never got sick and the Engineer berthing was in the very rear of the ship, right below the flight deck. We got the extreme of all three axes in any kind of seas. After a long night in the pit I'd hit the rack. I usually tucked my boots and shampoo bottle under the mattress to act as a kind of chock to prevent me from falling out while asleep (seen it, it sucks). Extremely tight enclosed space, dynamic environment, screws slapping as they come out of and go back into the water...the whole berthing shaking like the bridge on Star Trek.

To quote The Narrator from Fight Club- "Babies don't sleep this good." I was quite literally out in seconds.

Living in earthquake country, our airfields aren't always stationary, no need to join the navy.

On the South Carolina, we were nuke, so we unrep'ed every now and again just to keep up the qualification, but I can't think of any time we did it because we needed fuel (we did carry fuel for helo's, boats, backup DG's, etc.)

On the Briscoe it was at least once a week while underway (could go longer, but they never like to drop below 85% fuel and never below 80%). Thankfully I didn't have Deck Div, so my main involvement was normally driving if I happened to be the guy on watch. The whole op is a pain in the rear (necessary, but still a pain).

+1 I've never slept so well as I did at sea. Esp with some weather happening. Most my time berthing on Connie was on the 2nd deck aft stbd side against the hull -- right over #2 screw. Beautiful rhythms.

Sep '87 NorPac, Aleutians. 114 kts sustained wind over the deck. Breaking over and washing the flightdeck. Weatherdecks all secured. Remember looking out the passage from our shop on the O-2 level (flightdeck, our ceiling, is O-3) and looking up at wave crest. Musta been 60-70 foot swells. Good time to be on a CV. Smallboys took a serious beating.
