I recall reading a commentary that said:

Manitcore = Victorian England
Basilisk = American Colonies
Grayson = Meiji Japan
Haven = Revolutionary France
Solarian League = No analogue. Created to be the 1-ton gorilla in the corner.

And the little physics experiment that Horace Harkness arranged for Ms. Ransom was certainly less painful, if no less of a surprise, than Marat getting stabbed while in the bathtub.
