Bomb shelter industry sees spike in sales.

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

Off and on I've dream't of building/living in a berm house since I first read about them during the early survivalist era and Carter energy crisis (circa 1979-80).

I remember one above ground house (was it even in Nat Geographic?) that had been built entirely of expanding foam then covered in stucco or something. They formed the spaces by inflating visquen shapes and then sprayed the insulation over that. In context of this thread it wasn't much for security but it had some crazy R-values.

It depends on the system and how old the site is, but in a lot of cases you're buying the Launch Control Facility (LCF) only. Many of the associated silos were destroyed (blown up and then filled in after a couple of months for the [strike]Soviet[/strike] Russkie recon sats to get a good look) under START.

And since we're talking SHTF/TEOTWAWKI, and being really paranoid, how sure are you that those sites have been removed from the target lists?

It would make sense that they were removed as they were decommissioned to avoid wasting a nuke on a non-threat, but given some of the facilities I ran across when I reviewed target lists for a living...
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

Being in central Illinois, a tornado shelter reinforced to withstand a direct strike like Randy mentioned is a far more sound investment. Being able to handle fallout and overpressure is merely a plus!

I was looking around and saw this on the SurvivalBlog "bookshelf" of recommended books.

Looks pretty interesting for some ideas on an underground house. Mostly I want to see how he gets around the problems really. Anyone know of this book and if it's good?

I like it, but it isn't big enough. Where would I park the howitzer?
