Somewhere in my stuff I have an anthology of short stories by a variety of authors from the 30's and 40's, IIRC edited by Isaac Asimov, called "The Golden Age Anthology" or something similar. I think it was a two-volume set, and was IMHO pretty good. The stories were very light on the bug eyed monsters and scantily clad women, and I think I actually saw it a few weeks ago, but I seem to have developed CRAFT disease and can't remember a freaking thing.

I think they had a sequel (prequel?) Beowulf's Children. Also good by them was Oath of Fealty.

I have them both. The original is Legacy of Heorot, while Beowulf's Children is a true sequel- it's what happens when the next generation of colonists starts exploring more of the world.

Also worth a mention are the Niven and Barnes collaborations (no Pournelle) Dream Park and The Barsoom Project.

More generally, try the Free Library at Baen Books. If you like what you see, pick up some dead tree copies.

Ringo has a pretty diverse backlist, covering military science fiction, fantasy and technothrillers. If you get a chance, pick up a new hardcover release from him and Baen usually has a cd-rom of his collected works in various html and text formats.

In addition to those mentioned above, try some of the old classics.

Start with Edgar Rice Burroughs "Princess of Mars" series. Don't read them all at once. They're like candy. Too much and you get a stomach ache. Or a Thoat steps on you.

Then Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy and the "Robot" series.

Add in Arthur C. Clark, with his "Rendezvous with Rama" series, and "2001" series.

That ought to hold you for a while.

If you get Path of the Fury by Weber, there are two versions. One was the paperback I got years ago. The other I got a couple of years back in hardcover that is pretty much the full story version. In Fury Born, I think is the name of that one. Not just what she does to get even but how she got to be that kind of warrior in the first place.

There's a pretty good book called Orphanage by Robert Buettner. Recently I learned that it is now a series of 5 so far and got the others. So far, so good.

Also Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson

I'm Irish, so Heinlein's forays into the more 'acquired' tastes of human sexuality never bothered me much. Shouldn't allow it to detract from reading him.

Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio and Darwin's Children, a desperately sad couple of books built round a very clever concept.

And don't forget Crichton, either.
