Found out the other day that my uncle was one of the flight surgeons for the USN that checked the POW's over as they first got back into US hands. He doesn't know if he actually checked on McCain or not, but hes pretty sure that he was in the room when he was checked out.

Well that some cool family history right there, mekender! You should see what other stories he might have tucked away in his gray-matter or photo albums.

well, i know that my grandfather was USAF postal service over Korea and that while he was stationed on Tinan, his dojo master was Chiang Kai-shek's second eldest son...

in a box in my parents house we have old 8mm film of my dad at age 12 or so running across the field at the USAF Academy graduation ceremony where kennedy was a speaker. My dad runs head first into the back fender of the presidents car. knocking him flat to the ground.

Nixon spoke at my dads college graduation in 1973, and somewhere in my dads stuff we still have old "I like Ike" buttons that I presume were his fathers.

History is a funny thing, it amazes me how often normal people brush shoulders with it and do not even know it at the time.

FYI: The movie is taken in Hanoi, by a north vietnamese photographer. The Swedish reporter had been there for a long time, but left just before the prisoner release, so he left the camera to a north vietnamese reporter with access to the airport, and asked him to film all prisoners being released and send him the films.

The article that goes with it notices that "McCain has a slight limp".

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Swedish broadcaster SVT on Thursday released a previously unseen film clip purportedly showing the release of presidential candidate John McCain to the U.S. military in Hanoi in 1973.

A former SVT reporter, Erik Eriksson, said he found the video in the network's archives when he was looking for footage for a book he was writing about his experiences as a war correspondent in Vietnam.

SVT posted the edited 39-second clip on its Web site on Thursday. It shows McCain stepping off a bus with other prisoners. He has a pronounced limp but is not using crutches.
