Yep, I'm definitely late to the party, but I just got my hands on the first Dresden Files book.
Edit: And I finished it last night before going to bed. It's good.

No but he has some nice ideas about survival.cu74 wrote:The copy of Rawles' Patriots that I ordered arrived today.
A question for those of you who have already read it: Should I raid the 'wrap drawer' and make myself a tinfoil hat to wear while reading it?

Just finished reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig, was a good read, and I liked the synthesis he came to. I will likely need to reread it a few time and add my own marginalia to make further sense of it.
I ,also, in time waiting in Airports and on aircraft flying between Frankfurt, Bahrain, and Kuwait finiished Brad Warner's "Sit Down and Shut Up." A fantastic read which helps clarify Dogen's Shobogenzo and helps illustrate the need for Zazen in Buddhist Practice, all the while telling a story of a Hardcore punk reunion in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. I had meant to take Hardcore Zen with me, but for some reason grabbed the wrong book. It has pointed me toward the possibility that Zen may just be the thing for me if i can find a suitable master.

Reading Dostoyeski's "The Possessed", and re-reading "Acts" but I am spending most of my re-reading time with Clausewitz these days - slow going but worth it.
I have a biography of Frederick the Great Q'ed up for next.

I just finished the autobiography of Lee Iacocca
It was a very interesting read. From the Mustang to the Chrysler turn around it was very informative.
What is odd is that Iacocca sometimes is a hard right winger, and other times he seems almost socialist.

Years from now our children and grandchildren living in a 3rd world America will ask "What were you doing on March 21st 2010 and why didn't you stop it?"

Loathe is too strong a word. Disagrees with...and can make his arguments cogently. Dr. Pournelle's opposition to the iraq campaign is a good example of Loyal Opposition - he thought it was a mistake, but having been made, will do his utmost to bring it to a successful conclusion - while trying to ensure that we don't make the same mistake twice.Greg wrote:Last week I read "Escape from Hell" by Niven and Pournelle. (I've read their "Inferno" and yes I've read Dante's Divine Comedy, the Mandelbaum translation.) I enjoyed it, though there were a few jarring BDS notes. Yes, Bush Derangement Syndrome, Pournelle LOATHES Bush and anything "neocon", and well, it's in the book.
This week I'm starting "The German Wars" by D.J. Goodspeed. Enjoying it already.
I don't agree with Dr. Pournelle 100%, but if I reach a different conclusion, I start rechecking my logic. He's THAT good.

I'm in the beginning of Rob Roy. I really enjoyed Ivanhoe (the book) and Rob Roy (the movie), so it made seemed logical to venture into this. From having read and watched the previous, I didn't expect to find words like tergiversate, scholium, or hebdomadal, but thinks I to myself, "Here's a chance to learn to speak like CombatCommander!" so onward I plunge.
I've queued up Kenilworth, The Talisman, and Quentin Durward in case the current tome does not sufficiently enhance my vocabulary.
Oddly enough, the introductory notes on Rob Roy MacGregor's actual life seem to bear no resemblence to the novel thus far.
On a seriously violent tangent, some friends just returned from Scotland with photos. Sir Walter Scott's memorial dwarfs Robert Burns's memorial. Don't know why it didn't occur to me before that that would be the case.

Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

And in my little old town library I found volumes by Tom Kratman and Thomas Sowell on the shelf. So I took them out. (And the librarian didn't give me the eye. There are Republican pockets in Jersey.)
Oh yeah, and also I really wish that Andreas Katsulas (G'Kar) was still around...

I saw that too, by the way.
