To change speeds a little (I just looked at my bookshelf to jog my memory), you can try:

Harry Harrison - can be a little uneven, but the Stainless Steel Rat books can be a great deal of fun and the West of Eden books are very interesting. ISTR the Deathworld books aren't bad either.

Harlan Ellison - yes he's a maniac and an ass, but he's also very very good. He calls himself a fantasist, but much of his work is sci-fi-ish. I have several of his short story collections and they contain some real gems. Try "Stalking the Nightmare", "Deathbird Stories" and "Angry Candy" (names of collections, not names of stories)

Ian M. Banks is a very good science fiction writer. Try Against A Dark Background, or anything else.

He publishes plain fiction without the M. middle initial, and those books aren't as fun, IMO.

I'm really surprised nobody has mentioned this one:

"Armor" by John Steakley.

I understand he's working on a sequel. Hope he's able to finish it. (He's not exactly either young or prolific.)

Something that may interest some of you interested in near future Milscifi..

The Warbots series by G. Harry Stine. Posits what future warfare may be like when it's fought via remote control(from "command couchs" that link up the human nervous system to the drones). Think UCAV's doing all the fighting, with a 50+ years of technological advance over what's available today.
