Yeah, be careful with that one. I'd hate to read about you in the morning papers "Local Dumbass collapses ceiling trying to upright a 1 ton safe. Pictures on page D4."

The boom and winch could be used to get it off the pallet...
Reading your post again got me thinking. I don't think I have ever seen a towtruck with a boom here. They are generally flatbed trucks which can drop the bed to make a slope with a winch at the top.

Instead of a boom, they have an arm behind the truck with a figure of eight axle/wheel lifter (usually used for dragging illegally parked cars out of their spaces).

Just thinking around the box, here.
Not on the cards at the moment. However, when Mrs Denis finds out how much installing this gunsafe is going to cost, I may have to resign myself to living in it for the forseeable future...
Golf balls will collapse under the weight. I think the only sensible thing, which you are already doing, is to get someone else to throw out their back.

The nice German-army gentleman who is keen to get rid of his used safe was kind enough to look up his records for me, to find out who built the monster back in 1957. After a bit of Googling, I found out that the original manufacturer is still in business - the firm was founded in 1844.
On spec, I gave them a call, and asked whether they could pick up and deliver such a beast. Yesterday, I got back a very reasonable quote indeed (1600 euro), and they'll even bring the safe to their workshop and service it before delivering it here.

We may have a solution!
that sounds like a winner to me

Hmm. I neglected to post a picture of the safe. Here it is, in a rather poor photo from the original government-surplus auction site.
Somehow, I must have had a premonition about needing a better safe. I was at the gun-permit office today to chivvy them along about a recent application, and the lady mentioned that there has just been a change in Belgian law. Now, having a gun safe of a certain security rating is compulsory once one owns a certain number of weapons. She asked if I had a safe, and I could truthfully answer "oh yes, I just bought one recently". Otherwise, she would have delayed my permits even more. Serendipity.
I arranged with the original manufacturer of the safe for them to pick it up in Germany, service it, bring it to Brussels, and install it in my garage.
Now they've checked their manufacturing records, it turns out that this particular safe doesn't weigh 900 kilos, as the seller had told me, but 1300 kilos!!! The load-carrying capacity of the elevator where it's standing now is max. 1000kg, so they'll have to take the doors off to get it out of the building. That will cost me an additional 300 euro... Aargh.
If I suddenly stop posting, it'll be because there's no wi-fi reception inside [strike]the safe[/strike] my new cosy bedroom.
