Girl in Fatal Wreck Sent Text Message Moments Before Crash

Sunday, August 17, 2008

HIGHLAND, Calif. — Authorities say a 16-year-old girl who died after losing control of her car had been texting on her cell phone moments before the accident.

Kayla Preuss, of Highland, was driving on the Interstate 10 Freeway in Redlands when she lost control of her car and crashed. She died of head injuries.

Authorities say Preuss had been driving drunk and was speeding. But another factor may have contributed to the crash.

Phone records show Preuss was texting just before the accident.
Her cell phone, which was flipped open, was found resting on the floorboard by her feet.

Preuss' mother Kelly said she hopes the accident will make other people think before texting and driving.

that story was reported on coast to coast AM last night almost verbatim, except that the host left out the whole drunk driving and speeding part in order to make it sound like the text messaging was the problem.
Preuss' mother Kelly said she hopes the accident will make other people think before texting and driving.
But mom is completely fine with bad parenting, 16 year old drinking and driving, and speeding. I bet she wants to sue the alcohol company for making their product too.

As much as I hate to see a kid die driving, this one was obviously too stupid to live. And let's face it, she hit the suicide driving trifecta - intoxicated, speeding, and texting...all at the same time. At 16 years old you might get away with one of those infractions, but all three will almost certainly get you a closed casket.

Sadly, it is doubtful that any of her friends or classmates or other kids who hear this story will get the hint. They are all indestructible, bad shit always happens to someone else, and, of course, they are infinitely smarter than the dumb ass who bought the farm doing the same stupid stunt.

The problem is when they take someone with them. A friend back home lost a 17 yr old daughter to a driver who was texting. Driver lived, pax didn't.

Last I heard, vehicular homicide charges were pending confirmation of phone records. Sad, sad deal.

That is truly the sad part of draining the gene pool. I can fairly easily get past my emotional reactions when hearing of someone dying as a result of making incredibly stupid decisions, but not when those decisions also result in the death of an otherwise innocent person.
