See my "edit" right above yours... He's got a big house w/ extra bedroom, so (though I appreciate the offer) I'd probably stay there, better to be able to help him @ home.
I'm not sure I'm going, yet - want to give him time to grasp what's happened to him, and how much help he's going to need before I even bring it up to him - I know if I asked too soon he'd say no, so I want to wait until it "hits" him so he knows what he's turning down...
Unfortunately, he still thinks he's going to be able to be back to work in a few weeks - it's probably not going to happen...

Re: WEEeeeeellllll CRAP.
Sorry to hear that bad news, DD. He'll mend more or less, so that's something to be thankful for.
I take it he wasn't wearing shin pads? Lower leg breaks are not too common, but still a possibility in soccer.
Here's to a speedy recovery!

Well, if you do need to go, you are probably in no shape to be driving across country with that knee.... jeez, I sound like my mom! Someone friggin shoot me!!!
A flight would be much easier on the leg.

Re: WEEeeeeellllll CRAP.
Of course, the difference in flying to driving is many, but a few of the most obvious is: CONVENIENCE of having YOUR car there (no rentals to deal with, nor extra charges for mileage or dirt, or insurance).
No dealing with the TSA, no dealing with the airports and their BS security.
But you also have to deal with the time factor (and butt factor) of driving across country in a vehicle not usually designed for such an activity (seats designed for 30 minute drives, not 16 hours a day, for several days in a row).
If you have friends along the way, it's a prime time to stop for a chat, recharge, reprovision, enjoy some company, and take some photos along the way - that is, IF you have the time available.
Sit down and figure the cost of gas and incidentals, vs. the cost of an airline ticket and rental/insurance and how long you plan on being here. If you have the time available, you might be surprised at just how much money you might be able to save by driving - if all things remain equal. A couple of flat tires and a blown water pump could be MAJOR headaches/unexpected expenses at the wrong time. MUCH depends on the condition of the vehicle you plan on driving cross-country.
Frankly, I see LOTS of advantages to each way, however, much depends on the time available and condition of the vehicle. This is still spring, mild temps and blooming flowers (maybe even lots of bugs against the windshield), and should make for some GREAT photos along the way.
Really, I'd have a hard time choosing unless I was short on time - then I'd fly (if possible). But everything really depends on what your knee will tolerate. You can get an inverter to power the Polar Care Unit and pump ice water over your knee if it gives you trouble while driving.
Whichever you decide, make sure you talk to your doc FIRST and have enough Rx on hand to see you through the time you plan on being here.

POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.
I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

Re: WEEeeeeellllll CRAP.
Update: Late last night, I heard surgery went well, they didn't need to do the fasciotomy, they were talking of sending him home Sun or Mon.
Just got a call a few mins. ago, they took him back to surgery this morning worried about the pressure. The gal doesn't speak Orthopod, but they're taking him in to do a fasciotomy.
Hopefully they'll be able to close it later, I hope he won't need the skin-graft like I did...
Prayers help - thanks!

Re: WEEeeeeellllll CRAP.
DD, if you do the 40 all the way out, and you bring a tent or cover the S-10, there's a yard you can use in Prescott, AZ from family and/or friends. It'll be an all-day event from there to a li'l town outside Barstow called Newberry Springs, where I have another place you can park and maybe use a shower.
At that point you need to swing south on the 15 anyway, and 2 1/2 hours later to my front door in Moreno Valley. At that point at my house, you can stay, or just do your 3 S's and get a hot meal, and I'll send you on your way. We're maybe 2 hours out from 308Mike.
Sound do-able?

And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.
