12 guage flares in a normal shotgun

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

12 guage flares in a normal shotgun

Post by Frankingun »

Posting in Gear as I'm not talking about normal shotgun ammo here. Would it be possible to fire 12 ga. flares in a regular 12 ga. shotgun? I'm presuming a cylinder or improved cylinder choke, and a quick followup cleaning like for corrosive ammo. Thoughts? Crazy?
Buy ammunition and magazines.

You'll shoot your eye out!

It might work with a cylinder or improved cylinder. I know for sure a 12 gauge flare won't fit through a full choke, and cleaning out the mess it made required power tools. If you decide to experiment, I would highly reccommend doing so over a body of water.
Life is short, ammo is expendable. Empty the mag.

Sounds like a bad idea.

I nominate you to try it in your shotgun. Please let us know how it works out.

+1 on trying it over a body of water.

Mossberg makes a marine shotgun that is SOLD with flares. My understanding is that cylinder-choke is required.

That said, I HAVE fired a standard shot-shell in an old steel flare-gun. Used to carry in my truck in commie-fornia, planning to plead ignorance of the shells rolling around under the seat...

Sure it was dangerous, but then so was a LOT of the dumb-shiat I did as a kid.

YMMV...

There's at least 1 company selling 12gauge to 38 spl adapters.

I don't get the 37mm launchers on ARs. Is there anything it can be loaded with that would be useful in fighting? I can kind of see the actual flares being handy, but I'd rather not have the extra weight just for flares.

The overwhelming majority of ARs in private hands will never be used for fighting, and the 37mm launchers look like fun, in addition to being potentially life saving signaling devices.
