Blackeagle, have you tried Deramaxx or another prescription NSAID for your Lab? Deramaxx works like a miracle for Jack. He has a horribly arthritic front knee (and he's only 7). He couldn't keep up with me halfway through a brisk 3-4 mile walk. Now he's fine.

Tried him on Rimadyl, which is supposed to be the go-to NSAID for dogs and it didn't work at all. The quack-vets wanted to do surgery right away. I got a second opinion and was prescribed Deramaxx for him. Combined with gluc./chon. pills everyday and he's as active as a pup.

P.S. I made a point of avoiding Marley and Me.

He is a house dog, an 80 lb lap dog if you will. When he gets loose he puts his nose to the ground and won't look up, he would follow a scent forever. Except for the fellow down the street that could pass for Ted Kyznski's brother, he will not tollerate strangers. He ignores cats and likes other dogs.

Vet just recently put him on "Phycox" chews. Doing 4 a day this month and watching how he does. Doesn't want to stress his liver too much -- or my wallet. He's some improved (most noticeable navigating up/down porch steps) but still limping more than I like. Dang Labs just never complain about anything and live with it till it's bad and then you notice and they're in deep hurt.

Yeah, I have to bring mine in every 6 months to test kidney/liver function since he's been on the NSAID.

And you are right about the complaining. The new (good) vet said Labs are the worst breed in that aspect. They just cheerfully chug along until they are in hella serious pain. And by that time, it's sometimes too late.

My parents had a 13 year old Lab that was as bouncy as a baby until about 1 month before he died. They found a tumor the size of a grapefruit in his stomach. I guess it's a mixed blessing...
