Steel cut or pin oats are real oats, not oatmeal--oatmeal is steamed and rolled flat, then dried and packaged. Steel cut oats are well, steel cut, might call it coarsely ground, I suppose. They're granular, cook slower, and still have all the nutrients. Oatmeal tastes little like real oats; real oats have a rich, nutty taste. Oats absorb just about everything when they go through your system, in fact if you take prescription drugs you may not want to take them within a couple hours of consuming oats. The soluble fiber helps with cholesterol; IIRC the oats absorb gall from the digestive tract.

I got ten lbs of steel cut oats from a sister a couple of years ago, along with several cans of freeze dried/vacuum packed fruits, packaged and sold by Honeyville Grain Co. The stuff will last forever if kept sealed. We had a SHTF foods thread at the old forum a while back, I mentioned them there. Here's Honeyville's website:

Ten lbs of steel cut oats is a LOT; I wound up giving one five lb can to the other sister. The freeze dried fruit is really good when added while the oats are cooking. I like it with milk and a little brown sugar.

Here's a good write up about steel cut oats:

ETA 2/23: Sorry, I meant to say bile, not gall.

Thanks for the tips. I have never seen them at Kroger and we do have a hippie store here in town. Gotta go check it out because I am tired of the regular oatmeal.

Ack.

It seems "steel-cut" is American for what I would call "pinhead" oatmeal....!

Ack.

IMnsHO, pinhead oatmeal is the Devil's spawn, and unfit for human consumption. I wouldn't touch the stuff, unless I happened to feeding it to a horse (which is its proper purpose). It falls into the same category as brown rice and "wild rice" - basically inedible.

There's a reason why you find it with the hippy food.

Ack.

Steel cut oats are the only oats that I can stand to eat. I like it with a bit of peanut butter and a touch of maple syrup.
