$&%* Barbers

Post by Aglifter »

The Ancient Barber, as they all should be, is no longer open, nor is there any answer on the phone (in my desperation, I actually tried to make an appointment...) I've had the same conversation w. him for years, as he never remembers it, even though he, maybe, recognizes me... Dang old men..

What, are you complaining because he's no longer at your service and might have just decided to retire? 8-)

Take Chris' advice, but you don't need to spend that much for a start. I also have a comb device that uses double edge blades to comb thru my hair and even it up.

Fortunately my barber (REAL barber shop, complete with sports pool on the wall and Maxim, SI etc in the magazine rack) is around my age. So by the time he retires I might not have to worry about it.

New work location has a barber college across the street ($7), but I like to stay with a good business and want to help be sure he stays in business.

Feh. A couple of bucks every few months for ponytail bands and I'm good. 8-) When it's down, my hair reaches the bottom of my shoulder blades now. Only down-side is watching out so Eugene doesn't club me in the head with his Garand...

I've tried every single clipper etc... out there; and the only thing that stands up to my hair without eventually breaking, and cuts with any reasonable speed; is a professional clipper setup.

I've gone through I don't know how many $70 clippers; and they all turn out to be junk. If you want it to last, you have to get the real thing, which runs about $120, plus accessories.
No doubt, professional gear is the way to go and it really isn't that expensive. I will stick to my ancient Wahl, I think I picked it up in the 70's, used then. Compared to new clippers, it probably would qualify as professional. At the current rate, it will outlast my hair.

I use scissors and occasionally my wife trims off the excess ( fixes my mistakes) .

I've had Korean lady barbers cut my hair for years. The one I've used the last few years always throws in a lil' neck and shoulder massage. Nice. :)

The old native guy that Chris mentioned in his blog post is still at it, thankfully. I've been going there since he told me about it, and I won't go anywhere else unless I have to.

I wasn't complaining about the gentleman retiring -- As old as he was, however, I'm pretty sure it would be due to health reasons. I was grumbling about the lack of a suitable replacement. (The only places in the area are some salons, and some kind of "man spa" w. hot tubs, etc located in the "gay" part of town.) Tomorrow, I'll be trying out a young guy who portrays himself as having a "traditional" barber shop.
