Sad but true Chris I only buy 3 to 5 year old 1 ton trucks for myself, I buy new vehicles for my wife , Honda's now, Toyota's before the quality eroded in 05 onward. I usually get them for dealers list or below , this is a small town they hate to see me , I hate cars and trucks generally but they are a necessary evil.
I used to be a consultant,my view is let the bastards fail, you morons, they couldn't deserve it more.
So +1

Quite frankly, screw them.
I'm sure you can find a used car with your name on it.
Course you'll be giving the assholes your money whether or not you buy their cars, but fuck them anyway.

So they want $44,000 for $500 worth of 'crap' vehicle, and they wonder why their in the "Black Hole"??

I was wondering, Chris, what the heck are you transporting on a regular basis that requires THAT big of a vehicle?

So why not just spend the $2k on the Expedition and be done with the whole mess? I have a '97,a '98, and a '99 Ford truck (two gassers and a diesel) and the one with lhe least miles, the '98, has 117k miles. The '97 4wd gasser is at 238k, the diesel is at 170k, they all look near-new and run that way and I live in Ohio, rustpit of the universe. I bought 'em all used and do all my own maintenance and repairs which helps, but the point I'm aiming for is keep the old one 'til ya have nothing left to bolt repairs on. Run the wheels off.
I'm not old--It's too early to be this late.

Have you looked at the Mini-vans? We met the wife's criteria of lots of room to haul things and either 4WD or All-wheel drive with a Toyota Sienna, (and at a lot less than the Suburban price).
A modest amount of room behind the third row of seats, big space with the third row folded down, huge cargo area when the second row seats are removed. The Sienna has noticeably more room than the 4WD Explorer it replaced
As for the Buy American thing, some good US folks in and around Princeton, IL received paychecks to build our Toyota.

Screw em you say. Problem is: a year from now they'll be whining to Congress ... again ... and those spineless sycophants will give them more of our money. It's for the jobs, dontchaknow.

You forgot 2 children, occasionally their friends, and 2 weeks worth of Costco. Plus we're planning on more kids in the near future.CByrneIV wrote:Sheets of plywood, and several hundred pounds of tools and gun gear regularly get loaded up in the truck.

Mel,
Congratulations in advance of the good news.
Chris, looks like time to consider a Ford Club Van. Get one of the heavy duty ones, with three rows of seating. They should haul 8 or nine people, all sizes, plus a pile of luggage AND tow a trailer.

One of the ladies on our dive team at the aquarium had one. The thing was fantastic for roadtrips. Room to move about, creature comforts like nintendo, dvd, etc.Rumpshot wrote:Mel,

$2K to fix it--let's see that's 2 payments on the new piece of crap...Why not drive it until next years models are out and see what the marketplace will be like for 2010 and 2009 models...If GM doesn't see the writing on the wall you'll at least get it for the price you thought you would have, the $30K if not less...The trade in value will not have changed all that significantly...
