Alaskans brace for Redoubt Volcano eruption

Post by Termite »

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Hardware stores and auto parts shops scored a post-holiday run of business this week as Anchorage-area residents stocked up on protective eyewear and masks ahead of a possible eruption of Mount Redoubt.

Monitoring earthquakes underneath the 10,200-foot Redoubt Volcano about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory warned that an eruption was imminent, sending experienced Alaskans shopping for protection against a dusty shower of volcanic ash that could descend on south-central Alaska.

Hey Arctic Tom and NPR,

Ya'll keep us informed, and be careful, ya hear?

If an eruption happens and everyone's safe, please drop in and let us know what's going on and that everyone in your families are okay.

If something happens and you need assistance, don't be afraid to let us know.

Be safe and stay warm!!!

NPR is some what closer to the action , as I have said Alaska is a really big place , I am in Fairbanks and it wont have as much effect on us , but Anchorage occasionally has wind going the right way and folks cant get in to Anchorage for a few days at a time because of the volcanic dust, not good for jet engines.

Just looked up the distance from Anchorage 110 air miles makes about 350 from me so mostly inconvenience and some what of a pain .

Shoot, NPR can just go over and give that mountain a good kick and quiet her right down.

Seriously though, hope all turns out well, no canoeing down the lava streams!

Meh. We might get some ash, last time this happened was in '92, although it was mount Spurr that time. I've got extra air filters for my truck and my wife's Jeep, and plenty of cleaning supplies for the K&N in my Jeep. The worst thing that will happen to me, is that I might end up missing a few days of work, since the aircraft I work on (asian carriers) won't get dispatched to/from Anchorage if there is an ash plume. Other than that, the worst thing that happened last time was you couldn't see any of the markings on the roads, and right now they are already covered with snow and ice.

I was the lineboy at an FBO 50 miles from Mt St Helens when we went off. For a couple weeks there it was just me and an old Ford 3000 scraping a 5000 foot runway, associated taxiways and ramp area. The other 5K' crosswind runway? Fuggedaboutit

Thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. It was an impossible task -- completely wrong equipment. Hardly made a dent in things.

We finally got the boss's water truck w/ top mounted water cannon on loan. He had a forest services company (he contracted for replanting, mtn beaver mitigation, slash burning etc) that paid for his Aviation hobby.
