NP3 is pretty expensive for what it is -- and, at least on the glock I saw it on, not very nice -- it's essentially orange-peeled. One of the smith's around here has been sending guns out to be coated w... DLC? Something which is supposed to be quite corrosion resistant -- also very hard to scratch, he had me attack a sample w. a file, and it barely marked it.
I have some guns coated w. Black T, which is nice, but soft, and, of course, you could have it melonite treated.

I am confused by that link, actually.
Diamond Like Carbon is a distinct type of coating, it's not related to Titanium Nitride, or Boron Carbide. All three are nice, except TiN makes that pimped out gold-plated look (though you can use one of the Ti-X-N version and get it a different color). DLC is black and shiny. Boron Carbide is dull black, I think.

Logic showed up in this forum once. Then it got mugged in dark alley, and decided it was safer in other bulletin boards.Whirlibird wrote:Oh, sure bring logic into the discussion.

On my 721, I have a simple folding-leaf rear sight installed in the dovetail on the barrel. It stays out of the way of the scope and is adequate as a back-up.
I obtained alloy bottom metal from a Rem 700 BDL that should fit the 721. The stock may need some modification, so I'm waiting until I settle on a synthetic stock before I use it. I normally prefer walnut for a stock, but I'm going the utilitarian route with this rifle. Not exactly a truck gun, but practicality will rule my modifications.

NPR,
If it's already tapped for a Lyman peep why not stick with that? I presume it's a Lyman 58 like I have on my pre-64 M70 /06. The top "L" portion with the peep and adjustment screws comes out easily w/ detent button. It leaves just the base on the side of the receiver on my M70.
I leave the base on and just pull the sight. If the Remington base is the same just sight it in, remove the top portion from the base and bag it for use when needed. If you need it in a pinch due to scope failure, just click it back into the base in 3 seconds.
Save you some money over tapping the barrel for rear sight. I'm guessing you're like me and would always take a peep/ghost ring over an open sight. Faster acquisition, longer sight radius, more precise, yadda, yadda.

I was thinking about one of these. It's not aluminum, and seems to be more reasonably priced than some of the others I have seen, which start to approach $500 just for bottom metal.Slash wrote:I obtained alloy bottom metal from a Rem 700 BDL that should fit the 721. Is this like what you have? If it returns to its zero when reinstalled, I would much rather have that than a rear sight on the barrel. Wonder if I could 'glass a small storage compartment into the stock for it when not in use...blackeagle603 wrote: If it's already tapped for a Lyman peep why not stick with that? That's it! A Lyman 57. I was off by one...
Return to zero? Yup. Always has for me since '74. YMMV

Soooo, does anybody know of a good WECSOG level barrel crowning technique? I'd prefer not to spend any more on just getting it shootable for now than is absolutely necessary.
