Because doing something the gratuitously difficult way has a certain perverse appeal.

There are easier ways to make a profit - now, the Merwin Hubbel clearly needs resurrection though, as that's a thing of grace and beauty...

Or, as more likely in this case, easier ways to not make a profit.

Pretty sure there's already been a failed, money-losing attempt to revive Merwin Hulbert revolvers, too.

One, there are a fair number of originals floating around, with some hefty prices attached, so somebody wanting an automag is already prepared to spend a bit of loot to acquire one.

Second, modern machine tools, like 4 and 5 axis cnc machining centers were basically not available at the time due to cost, so it would make machining them that much easier. Third is alloy selection, if they go with say 416 as a stainless alloy, it would be a lot easier to machine.

I've had a few but my all time favorite was the .30 carbine automag. I deeply regret selling that.

Hulbert, Merwin and Hulbert. And there is a company that's been trying (not very hard apparently) to bring it back. I get the feeling the Automag will end up the same way. And, after a search, the website has disappeared and you end up at the Sharps Rifle Company page now.
