It is? Never had the problem myself. The op-rod's positional difference between a charged chamber and a locked back bolt is what .... 3 inches? Hard to miss, IMHO.
What I meant is when you are shooting the rifle. If you have your cheek on the stock and are looking through the sights, you can't see the bolt or op-rod.

I suppose if you are confronting punk kids on your lawn with an M1, you would just aim with the front sight, and would notice being out of ammo though.
