The challenge is in -not- shooting them at that point. We counted 15 of them in my dad's back yard in October while we were watching the news one night, all does and fawns. They grazed because they know that no one will shoot them in the neighborhood and our neighbors have three acres left wild that is surrounded on all four sides by housing. It's like a safe zone for the deer.

didn't you forget mosquito mating season? Or is that during construction season?

I think it's actually just September and October. Those months, after a summer that made you think you'd died and gone to hell, it's just starting to cool off and get slightly pleasant outside. You start to think maybe your outdoors routes can be defined by criteria other than minimizing time spent outside of AC'ed buildings, and actually start to enjoy the weather when you step out of the building.
That's when the mosquitos get you, they don't want you to slack off and think you live in California or something. Sure the weather might be okay, but hordes of mosquitos that will bite you, often in the same place, once again make you revert to "minimize time spent outside of buildings" planning. Also, don't forget the cockroaches, fireants, bats*, and grackles.

I don't mind the bats too much, they eat the mosquitos afterall, but when I walk around at night, I can see them, or rather black streaks a bit darker than the sky. Also, I have pretty good hearing, and once in a while, I can hear their sonar. It's kinda creepy, but like I said, as long as they eat the mosquitos, I am ok with them.

I was in Fairbanks in June of 2006 and was in a hotel right next to the bird sanctuary there. Wife and I went for a walk and ended up in a wooded strip between the hotel and the sanctuary. We almost got eaten alive in 30 seconds or so.
