I recently shaved my beard; it was never going to grow to Robertson-length anyway. Digging around in the cabinets in the bathroom produced a fifties-era Gillette safety-razor. I checked E-bay and found 100 Wilkinson-Sword double-edged stainless-steel blades for $14.00. I'm still on the first blade after three weeks and still getting an excellent shave! I use Barbasol cream at $.98 per can.

I'm keeping the mustache.

I have two of those. I leave one at the gym in my locker. Not sure where the other one went. Not quite as good as the Merkur, but better than anything else I've tried.

I like Astra and Personna blades from Amazon a bit better than the Wilkinson blades. OTOH, the Wilkinson blades are on the shelf at the local Wally World.

Astra and Derby both seem to be the consensus for "try first" blades among the DE fanatics, along with "Feathers are wicked sharp, but dull fast and cost too much" and "Merkur makes great razors but lousy blades"

Good enough for me, then. I'm a utilitarian DE aficionado as opposed to a fanatic. In most technology, I let others test the "bleeding edge" (pun intended), then settle on good, reliable, and a bit above acceptable. Others spend the money and do the painstaking research. I'm good with learning from their lessons, then moving on to the next attention item. :geek:

I should give Derby a try.

I razor burn very easily. Feather blades do give the best first shave but do seem to dull pretty fast. Persona blades seemed sharp enough and did seem to last awhile. Shark blades did not seem all that sharp out of the package but did seem to last quite awhile before I put in a new one.

I don't remember why but I do remember not really liking the derby blades. Dorco blades seemed almost dull when new but they were cheap and maintained that sorta dull for awhile.

I guess I should try Astra and Sword blades.

My Derby blades were kind of dull.

I have heard some not so good things about Derby blades.

So far I have tried 4 different kinds in my Van Der Hagen, cheap drug store blades, Astras, Israeli Personna Platinums in the red box, and the Van Der Hagen blades (apparently re-branded Timors) that came with the razor. So far I have been most impressed with the Astras, while the Personnas and Hagens were workable, with the drug store ones being crap. Once I use up what I have I'll give feather blades a go. I do think I am rapidly outgrowing the Van Der Hagen, and will eventually need something a bit more aggressive that can yield a closer shave.

Digging through the medicine cabinet, I actually found some Derby's, so I must not have liked them much, since they didn't stay in the rotation. I haven't and probably won't try the Feathers based on what I've read. "Wicked sharp" says either "razor burn" or "Damn. I'm bleeding" to me.

My first pick is Astra with Personna close behind. The Astras seem to shave a bit better for me, but the Personnas really last.

That's backwards you know. ;)

It's also the same reasoning behind complaining that someone made your kitchen knives too sharp (yes I've heard this and no it was not my wife thank goodness).

Hm. May be.

I'll eschew them on the "dulls quickly" then.
