Is it an AR? Is it an AK?

Post by Captain Wheelgun »

No, it's a Mutant!!!

After messing around with ARs and AKs for a few years, I decided that I like the AR better than the AK, mostly due to the better ergonomics and accuracy. However, I also really like the 7.62x39 cartridge.

So, naturally, I wanted something that combined the two. After looking at what was available, the CMMG Mk47 Mutant had pretty much everything I wanted. Plus it tripped my taste for oddballs, while still being a very practical design.

I hope to have a range report soon.

Ya know, I have about the same number of bolt action rifles as I do AKs. And only the most accurate one of the bolties, will out-shoot the most accurate of the AKs.

One of my most accurate rifles is an AKM from a parts kit...

We need to get some magnification on that rifle and see what it will actually do with good ammo (wish I could find Lapua in 7.62x39 here). I think your results with it so far, can be chalked up to the fact that nearly all rifles have more inherent accuracy than their shooters can take advantage of, so having a rifle that is well set-up for a particular shooter can really pay dividends in terms of giving results that are better than what you might expect from a given weapon.

Put the original Warsaw length stock, shitty wood donkey-dick hand guard, small pistol grip, original AK rear sight, and shitty trigger on that rifle, and I think you'd find shooting it to be a bit different experience. As it stands, it has a very nice hand guard, a grip that fills your hand well, first quality milled trigger group tuned within an inch of its life, a good peep sight, and the very best stock I have ever managed to build, sized for our orangutan length arms. And you're a better shot than I am to begin with. Of course you shoot it well.

When are you going to put a scope on that thing, anyway?
