Question about custom 1911 grip manufacturers

Post by JAG2955 »

Okay, this is way out there, we're only in the hypothetical stages...

My USNA class wants to do a class pistol. A guy has already laid the groundwork, and we're talking about it on our private Facebook page.

I noted that the USS Constitution has just entered drydock for overhauls, and suggested that if we've got an alumni up there, if we could get enough wood to make grips for our pistol...that it would be the greatest thing ever. So far, we love the idea. I'd want it smooth, no engraving, no checkering. Just Old Ironsides.

Anyone know who could do a large order of 1911 grips made out of live oak that spent 200 years on the ocean? Assuming that the wood is good, and that we could get any/enough.

Well there used to be this forum member... oh nevermind.

Lol!

I knew that someone was going to say it, but I figured it would have been NPR.

There's a poster on the TexAgs forum who has a business doing that kind of thing - they just did a run based off planks from the Texas.

Not I. I reject the entire notion of using wood from the Constitution for such a base purpose. What do you do for an encore? Granite countertops made from part of Fort McHenry?

Edit to add... If they had any such removed wood, and there were enough to make a few presentation cases for the next few times the Medal of Honor must be awarded (whenever that might be), I could go for something like that.

Ust'a be this little outfit in California that would do jobs like that. Pachmayr. But I doubt today they'd be interested in such a small run.

Today, I'd contact an outfit like Macon. If they weren't interested, they could probably put you in touch with someone who wanted the job.

As the ship in question is a national historical monument, as well as a still-commissioned U.S. Navy warship, what you're talking about probably only violates about 387 specific federal laws.

That said, let us know when you get the wood. 8-)

Personally, I think they should be carving pieces into sharpened wooden spikes and handing them out to Navy Seals to drive into ISIS members' hearts.
Just because I like the idea of Old Ironsides killing America's enemies right into the 21st century.
