9mm AR15
A good friend of mine has about 3 acres in a semi-rural setting. Lately, he is intent on getting to just one caliber and has chosen 9mm. How effective would this be out of an AR? Could you take a deer with it? For the record, he also has a Mosin and a 20 gauge rifle, but wants only one caliber for carbine/handgun, for economy. Fire Away!
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.

Re: 9mm AR15
The late Jack O'Connor once wrote that there have been more deer killed in the U.S. with .22 LR than with all other centerfire rifle cartridges combined. So, yeah, a 9mm will probably take a deer just fine given (1) proper shot placement, and (2) sufficient penetration.
Wouldn't be my first choice, or probably even my tenth, but if it was all I had, and using it meant the difference between eating and not eating, I'd give it a try.

For humane kill, I would say "no". Also, tell your friend he is making a bad call. Ask him how he would feel if his caliber of choice was the .22, and look at the current market. There is no reason it couldn't happen to the 9mm

As much as I hate to agree with you, you're right on the "humane kill" part of the argument. However, if it's "humane kill" versus "feed the family", I'll beat the sucker to death with a hammer if I have to...

Ya'll know there are 16" 9mm uppers available? I'm not saying its the perfect answer, but I'm certain it'll perform a damn sight better than a 10" upper.

Re: 9mm AR15
If he has the Mosin and a 20ga. He can always put slugs in the 20ga for deer, and the Mosin is fine for deer. The 9mm out of an AR would probably work as well as the 20ga slug, like less than 70m range. People kill deer all the time with a bow at 30m. 9mm will kill just as well as an arrow at that range. I'd say he's OK.
I have a 9mm Colt AR. It's more than just an upper. Mine has a block pinned into the lower to take the proprietary Colt AR 9mm magazines, which I think are modified Uzi mags. For me, it's more of a toy than anything else.
This goes back to a thread on carbine/pistol combos. Other suggestions to make:
FN 5.7 pistol and FN PS90 carbine
Glock .40 S&W and Kel-tec carbine
Colt 1911 and Beretta CX4 45 carbine
S&W .357 revolver and Marlin 1894C
AMT 30 pistol and M1 Carbine
BFR .45-70 revolver and Marlin 1895
Not my choice, but many choose not to have any eeevil guns in their house. It's a free country ... so far.

Re: 9mm AR15
I would second the 20 gauge over a 9 mm. It would also be good for rabbit and birds and if he had a slug barrel probably good out to 100 yards-ish.
9mm is specifically excluded for deer in my state so he may want to check that.

My JR carbine in 9mm rocks. I don't know about hunting deer with it, but I sure wouldn't want to be shot by one.
BTW, JR has announced that they're coming out with a .357 SIG version of the gun, for whatever that's worth. They also have a takedown version:

He has land and money. At this point he's just being difficult. Tell him to suck eggs and don't get drawn in. All calibers exist for a reason. Most are good ones. If he was serious he would pick .357 in a pistol caliber but he didn't so either he didn't get enough hugs from mommy or he's messing with you.
