Took a newbie out today

Post by First Shirt »

This young lady is the daughter of a good friend, and she's leaving on Monday (3/23) for Parris Island. Couple weeks ago, she mentioned to her dad that she's never fired a firearm of any type, so he asked if I could give her a quick intro to shooting.

After reminding her that one day at the range isn't going to make her the next Chris Kyle (first I said Carlos Hathcock, but she didn't know who that was) we covered safety, nomenclature, operation, and firing.

At 50 meters, she got 8/10 on target! We had a great time, and by the end of the day, she was wearing out the center of the 8-inch target markers. Granted, that was probably more a function of natural talent than the quality of the instruction, but at least she won't be totally at sea when she starts rifle training in boot camp.

(She offered to pay for the ammo, but I told her that in payment, she can teach me how to do it right when she comes back home on leave.)

We're all proud of her, even if she is gonna be a [strike]jarhead[/strike] Marine.

I'm sure the guys at Parris Island will give her some more instruction.

I was taught that the proper length of an AR stock has your nose lightly touching the charging handle. That gives your eye the proper distance from the rear sight and lets you maintain a proper cheek weld. Since those innocent times, I've always shot an AR with my nose touching the charging handle.

The goal was just to get her comfortable with the platform, since (and I so advised her) the Green Machine will teach her how to shoot the way THEY want her to shoot!

Bottom line is that she had good time, isn't scared of the firearm anymore, and knows safety rules and what the various parts are called.

For a two-hour session, I'm gonna call it a win. Let the DIs do the hard part!!!

No worries!! I was a zoomie intel geek before I became an office dweeb first shirt. What I know about M-16s you could write in a matchbook with a grease pencil.

Just wanted to make sure she had a start before PI, both as a favor to her dad, and because she's a good kid.

Honestly, I think I had as much fun as she did!

Ditto. We had 6 from Texas and 3 from Wisc. It was our annual ski/vaca trip here in Colorado. The first and last day were spent on our range. I may not be too good at keeping the attention of little girls here at the mini ranch but I can deal with teenage boys. BBQ, dart boards, tomahawks, woodworking shop and private shootin range did the deal. It's day three since they've gone home and I'm still happily cleaning guns from the big shoot. Everybody had a great time shooting. We even set off the cannon and the mortar a few times. If you ever wanna see a 12 YOA run like crazy, just try to hand him a lit fuse connected to nothing........
