I'm working away from home on a fairly long term basis (in Southern California) under conditions that make it very difficult for me to have a gun along. I thought, no problem, I'll go to a shooting range that rents guns to stay in practice and have some fun.
All of them I've found require a partner to rent a gun. I am guessing this is in response to the rash of gun range suicides in the past few years. The idea being that you won't commit suicide with a friend along or if you try the friend will stop you. No jokes about taking someone along you secretly hate!
I don't know anyone here that I trust around guns and/or want to know I know anything about guns!

About 3 hours drive to Vegas. Doable in a weekend if I want to brave the traffic.

Tell it to their lawyers.
There's no background check for gun rentals.
Asking for visitors to bring a friend is the least intrusive option available, as opposed to just not renting guns to anyone at all, and probably going out of business.
So then where are you?
I know of several ranges that have closed specifically because of the "I'd like to rent a gun and one bullet" clientele.
I know firsthand of one where a tourist flew here from Japan just to off himself: he shot himself in the abdomen three times, and then gave himself a coup de grace to the head.
So unless you wanna come by afterwards and do the clean-up on Lane 10, cut them some slack.
Their guns, their rules.
Bring your own guns, no problems.

Could be a market for a range that was exclusively marketed as a one shot rental range. Maybe even legal in Oregon now.
Cross market it with an associated funeral parlor.

You pretty much nail it with this. It is about liability and I understand that. I don't have to like it though! I'm in San Bernardino.Aesop wrote:Tell it to their lawyers.

Re: Shooting ranges requiring two people to rent a gun stink
I'm here about 3 weeks out of each month until June unless I find a job in Michigan before then. I've got applications in a couple of places with a couple more coming up soon.
We took a chance and when my wife got a job offer out of California we sold out and moved. I kept my job here because of the money and it is easier to get a job in my field if you have a job.
I heard a radio ad for a new shooting range in Riverside this past weekend and got inspired, drove over only to find out about the new realities. The last time I rented a gun was 20 years ago so this caught be unprepared but I understood the reasons.
It isn't a big deal, just looking for a way to keep the trigger finger in practice and have some fun. I think I'll take motorcycle riding classes instead!

I really miss Michigan. It takes a year or so to find your groove there, but once you do.... If I could get the pay and job security that I have now from MSU, I'd go back in a second.
