As this is a Yogi thread, I heartily suggest the 375 Ruger Alaskan... It's actually not a terrible choice, if you hand load.

I also vote 270. 6.5 Swede is lovely, but a good hunting rifle should have readily available ammo.

Bit more recoil, but a 300 Win mag is available in just about any gun shop in the world.

Personally I would avoid 308 or 30-06 hunting rifles, as various countries will have it prohibited, and they don't do anything not easily done by a 300 Win.

If the 300 Win is too much for you, I suggest some cupcake flavored vodka to ease your pain...

I'm a guy who hunts elk with a .375H&H, so I tend to over gun, but IMHO, that is a bit much for deer and antelope.

If you want a heavy, .375H&H is a lot more common than .375 Ruger. Any shop that stocks .375 Ruger will have 6.5x55 Swede.

Where did you find prohibitions on .308 Win and .30-06? Both RSA and Tanzania have no such restriction.

If I want heavy, I can always go with a 40MM HEDP round.

Former French colonies prohibit 308 and 30-06, and I think some Latin countries. Military calibers are prohibited in pistols in much of Latin America.

Who cares? For 99% of us, that's not ever going to be a consideration.

Isn't Louisiana a "former French colony?"

Yeah, and Spanish, then French again, but we have better gun laws than most other former French colonies. Hell, we have better gun laws than the vast majority of most US states. But we're a gun-friendly bunch.

If you want to step up from the 30 cal, I love my 338 in a Ruger M77 with a Ziess Scope , very accurate and has a useful range of 500 + yards ( I can consistently hit a 10 inch circle with it ) and plenty of knock down power for every thing from growlers to large ungulates. and it is more manly you wouldn't have to shave your knads.

Grew up hunting deer and antelope with 30-06. In Montana there almost isn't a bar or hardware store where you can't get 30-06.
