Guiltiest Musical pleasures...

I like bluegrass, though I don't feel guilty about it. I used to have a Sirius radio, and it had a bluegrass channel. I am not sure which I liked more, the music, or the reactions I got from my passengers, trapped inside, screaming for dear life, convinced that they were about to die, and thinking that the last thing they would ever hear was the twang of a banjo. Ah, memories....

When I was a kid, my mother loved Lawrence Welk. Unfortunately, The Untouchables, (Robert Stack as Elliot Ness) was on at the same time. We had to wait for a commercial on the Lawrence Welk show, then switch to the Untouchables for a minute, then switch back to Welk. Today it would be called child abuse.

We didn't have a TV until the early 70's. (yes, I was book worm). The majority of our TV time was Lawerence Welk for several years.

Til we finally got a TV it was an occasional after school peak at Grandma's 11" B&W set when she visited and stayed in the rec room unless invited over to a friend's house w/ more liberal TV policy. My sister and I would run in get the last half hour of Brakeman Bill and Crazy Donkey (local kid's show, on Ch11 from Tacoma): he'd introduce some cartoons Gigantor, Underdog, Rocky/Bullwinkle. Then a half hour of Gilligan.

After G'ma passed away, on we'd go up the street to our "adopted" Grandma's house at 7PM on Saturday nights. She had a magnificent Magnavox color console and the whole family would watch Lawerence Welk with her. Then we'd get to stay 30 minutes more to watch Pettycoat Junction before heading home. Saturday night -- had to put all the family shoes on newspaper on top the washing machine and get the polish kit out and get busy for Sunday morning.

When the wife and I first got married, we lived in this little ~50-sf (exaggerating a little) apt. The neighbors on the other side of the wall were far-Eastern of some type. The dude in that apartment apparently had the same basic schedule that I did. When I would shower in the morning, he was showering just across that tiled wall of the shower. He would belt out show tunes in his thick accent. I always got tickled hearing him enjoying himself. One day, when he was singing some familiar show tune, I started singing the other part in the song. That was the last time I ever heard from him.

The closest thing I have to a guilty musical pleasure is having once been a member of the Columbia House Record Club and getting a bunch of albums just for one song on the album.

I often find myself humming showtunes... I know quite a lot of them words included, along with the dippy John Denver stuff et al.

Humming? Dude I sing'em out loud. I love musical theater, and jazz standards. Always have.
