Guiltiest Musical pleasures...

Post by Aglifter »

I was raised on Classical, Blues, Jazz, and the Beetles (oh, and African Tribal music, courtesy of a nanny from Sierra Leone) -- I didn't own any rock music/hadn't heard it until ~17. Until I started lifting, I just found rock simplistic, and boring... Er... well, except that as a very young child, I loved break dancing... which leads to the guiltiest musical pleasure...

Late 70s/80s rap/hip-hop.... (I had a great baby sitter.) Damn Sirius for canceling Back Spin...

I'd think a guilty musical pleasure would be more like a metalhead who really really really enjoyed listening to Lawrence Welk or some such.

I used to have a secret life
and make excuses and pretend
I was a afraid if someone knew
they wouldn’t talk to me again
but tonight I’m gonna tell the truth

I am a closet disco dancer
I want to dance all night (Woo-hoo!)
I am a closet disco dancer
It makes me feel alright. (Woo-hoo!)
I am a closet disco dancer

I am a closet disco dancer
It makes me feel alright. (Woo-hoo!)

Remember 1985 you gave me record by Police
You didn’t know that next day I traded them for new BeeGees
But tonight I’m gonna tell the truth

I want to dance all night (Woo-hoo!)

It makes me feel alright. (Woo-hoo!)

The Statler Brothers, and other assorted Old Country. Except, I don't feel guilty.

Wasn't that Ah wunnerful, ah wunnerful? Thanka you Jimmy and Norma for that wunnerful number. We'll be-ah right back for new dance number from Bobby and Sissy after this word from our sponsor, Geritol.

I was a kid in the Seventies, with very square parents. In addition to the non-Disco, non-Rock pop of the day, I grew up hearing drek like John Denver, Rodger Whittiker and Judy Collins, as well as the soundtracks to Caberet, Pipin, and Oklahoma. To this day I can quote the lyics to Both Sides Now, Annie's Song, and Corner Of The Sky from memory. You do NOT want to get into an earworm sharing contest with me...

(And people wonder why my current musical tastes tend towards multiple electric guitars and people screaming in Finnish at volumes which worry the USGS... It's the only thing which can drown out the hideous non-euclidian sycopation of It's A Hard Knock Life!)

yeah, all those Rogers and Hammerstien and 101 Strings LPs in the old Magnavox console Hi-Fi left me waaaaay too comfortable with show tunes.

I often find myself humming showtunes... I know quite a lot of them words included, along with the dippy John Denver stuff et al.

My mom was a big Barry Manilow fan. She had all his albums and listened to them constantly. Give me the title or the first line of one of his songs and I can sing the entire thing, at least those he released before the mid eighties. I don't own any Manilow albums, but I will hum along when one of his songs comes on the radio.

As for stuff I actively seek out, I'm not ashamed to admit that I own several Weird Al Yankovic albums and listen to them often, especially in the car.
