I figured the real reason was to give some politician some pork to hand out.

IIRC it was basically payback from the NATO allies for forcing them to switch from .308 to 5.56 (after forcing them to .308 in the first place) in the name of interoperability. Our piece of shared suffering was moving from .45 to 9mm. Now, picking the M92 might have been pork... God forbid we do something simple like going to 1911's in 9mm or even something like a BHP. But we had to go to "modern" firearms*.


*I repeat my statement that double action autos are a hardware solution to a training issue.

Dont forget that CZ was behind the iron curtain at the time, so the 75 was right out otherwise it may well have won.

Only about 99% of the time.

As a rule, the issue sidearm other than for MPs should probably be a stainless Ruger Mk III in .22LR with integral suppressor, or the equivalent.
There are a lot more useful things you could do with that, whether we're talking about survival hunting, getting rid of sentries or dogs, or for pilots down behind the lines.

I was always jealous of the guys who got on the M9 letter. For maintainers, it simply made more sense than the M16, since pretty much any realistic scenario in which we'd have to shoot someone would be at very close range, where having an M9 at your side would be far quicker and easier to employ than an M16 with the safety on and and empty chamber slung behind your back.

Of course, whoever was in charge of contingency plans clearly wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

I'm a firm believer that more power is good fro SD handguns, but "everybody" wants to carry "comfortably".

Unfortunately a bigger caliber requires a bigger gun to handle recoil, and many don't want to "lug around"
a lot of size/weight so they compromise with a smaller caliber. Yes, a 9mm can certainly end your day if
you "taste" a round or two BUT if your shot placement is less than desired the larger caliber is going to
give better results than a smaller caliber in less than optimum placement shots.

I carry a 5" 1911 10mm which is a large/heavy pistol, but with the right belt/holster it isn't all that un-
comfortable really and I like the added power and accuracy I get along with "controllability" so for me
that is OK.

I want every advantage if/when I need to blast someone intent on my harm so I make the minimal
"sacrifice" of carrying a larger handgun.

Note: I also drive a Lincoln Towncar for the same reason; more car - more protection.
