Del,
I suspect our needs are a bit different. If I were hauling fuel on a Jeep out into the Alaskan bush, I wouldn't use "standard" plastic cans either. Although the Rotopax fuel packs work quite well(but are pricey), and are really tough. But order the vented yellow spout, the CARB compliant spout is crap.
My most important need is for my fuel containers to not be unsafe, which rules out all plastic cans. The plastic threads of the spout pulled past the plastic threads on the can, even though the spout was properly installed. When that happened, the spout and can parted company as the can slipped from my hands, fuel went everywhere, including into my left eye. Fortunately this happened in my driveway in Anchorage, and not in the middle of nowhere.
Supposedly these new jerry cans are self-venting and work well. I'm probably buy one soon to test, and when I do, I'll report my findings.
Well, of course those work well. :D They are the NATO style metal cans like I currently use, and which I recommended in my previous post. They are the same design as the original German "Jerry Cans" invented for the Wehrmacht prior to WWII, and are the best fuel cans in existence. Unfortunately, they are not EPA compliant for use as fuel cans. That website only lists certain states where they are banned, but that info was out of date as of January 1, 2009. All fuel cans sold in the USA as of that date must have locking, threaded fittings for the nozzles, and "spill proof" vented nozzles. That is why the cans sold at the link I provided are marked "not for fuel use" even though they are otherwise the same cans.

Edit to add; the cans Termite linked appear not to have the additional locking pin as on the Wedco cans and the Deutsche Optik cans that I linked, which are the same thing other than color and "not for fuel use" markings of the latter. I have read that not all "NATO style" cans will interchange nozzles, so there is the possibility that those won't. I would recommend getting the ones I linked because they seem to be the most common of the NATO style, and also the locking pin is a good feature to have.

Here is a page that shows good views of the locking pins I was talking about, plus general history of the Jerry cans:

I bought my original batch of cans from these guys in 2008, and a water jug from them later, but it doesn't look like they have much in the way of cans these days.

Interesting; I've never had that happen. The aftermarket spouts that I purchase work well, IF you use the proper spout collar. There are several different styles and pitch of threads, using a collar with the wrong threads can cause exactly what happened to you.
I went ahead and ordered the 10liter can at the link; I'll post how it works when I test it.

There is another fuel jug that folks can consider: the VP Racing re-fueling jug. It is exempted from CARB compliance.
"The VP Motorsport Container is intended only for use as a rapid refueling device for racing vehicles used in professional off road and closed course competition racing events. It is NOT a portable fuel container as described by ASTM, EPA, CARB or other state or federal agencies. Intended for racing fuel only; not to be used for street legal fuels."
"Not intended for street fuels".......but it comes in red, blue, and yellow.

I am told by racers that it pours quite well, and is very tough........

Son of a bitch, man. $135 for a 2 1/2 gallon can? They'd better be the best gas can in existence. I have 3 of those 5gal old-style Blitz cans. I'm looking to upgrade, but that's too rich for my blood.
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

What you are paying for there, is the pre-ban status of those gas cans. I bought a bunch of the 20L cans in 2008, and I probably could have quintupled my money by selling them on Ebay if I had wanted to. If I had known that Deutsche Optik would be offering their "not for fuel use" versions, I might have done that. Now that they have had fuel in them, they can't be readily shipped, so I am "stuck" with them. All of the post 2009 cans either have the fucked up venting, or they are marked not for fuel use, and in theory you could get in trouble if you get caught using them to transport fuel. The same cans, but made in 2008 or earlier, you are good to go federally. California and some other states (the feds adopted the CA regs as of 1/1/2009) may be a different story.

Otherwise, the $135 can is almost the same exact thing as what Deutsche Optik sells for $41. The only other difference is the color, and the one from D.O. has an additional locking pin on the closure.

I have a shed full if pre ban gas cans.
The idea that such a thing exists is insulting.
Only the government could eff up a way to pour fluid from one container to another.

It would be humorous, except the new cans are actually more dangerous to users than the banned ones. If for no other reason but you are almost forced to make modifications to the new "improved" cans to make them work halfway well. As a rule, any situation that forces or encourages work-arounds is bad safety design. Particularly where the general public and flammable liquids are concerned.

Damn, sometimes the govt. makes me depress... OK, more than sometimes.

Seriously, we need to worry about pre-ban gas cans? WTF has happened to people?

Oh, nice! Thanks, NPR. Would you recommend for me the 10L or 20L? I'm just extending the range of the cars if I have to GTFO, or fueling up the generator.

I get naptha, methyl chloride, and mineral spirits in honkin heavy duty 5 gallon plastic jugs. Lacquer thinner comes in 55 gal plastic barrels. They're free - sorta. Have funnel, will travel...
