What 164 lbs of Tannerite Does to a Barn

Post by 308Mike »

YouTube video, and a still from TheBlaze, who seem to think it's amazing to hit a large tub container with a rifle shot from 101 yards (This Guy Blows Up a Barn with One Perfect Shot):

And I thought 8 pounds in an ice chest was pretty good. Remember this goodie?

Working linky to the video.

A couple comments-
1. People pay good money for barn wood that is unpainted and nicely aged. And they come take the barn down too.
2. It's now a lot of work to push the mess into a pile to burn than it would have been to just douse it in Diesel fuel and strike a road flare.
3. Surprisingly the debris flew nearly 100 yards to where the observers were sitting. Lucky the debris didn't perforate them.
4. Otherwise, pretty cool!

Also a "Remington 700 with a .180 grain projectile"... that light bullet must have been going about 30,000 FPS or so?

I worry a little that people will see videos like this, and call for the banning of explosive targets.

I'ma go with closer to 3000 fps.
If someone's figured a way to get a rifle projectile up to near orbital escape velocity, call NASA.
But it could make the idea of "shooting the moon" with the Barrett Moonfucker a practical possibility.

I don't know how that happened, I found it doing a public search of videos (and I don't subscribe to any channels).

Large pieces of solid, old growth hardwood timber? He just blew up a serious amount of cash..

Yeah, other than the entertainment value, there's not a lot of reason to use that much explosive. Of course, when Tannerite is all you can get, that's what you use. Of course, we shooters know that shooting a Rubbermaid tote at 100 yards barely qualifies as a "perfect shot". More like a "neophyte shot".

I knew a guy once who made a living taking apart old buildings for the salvage value. He and his crew would take apart old buildings, salvage the windows, doors and fixtures. Things like hinges and bathtubs and sinks. He stored that stuff and became the go-to guy locally for old construction materials for a remodel. He made a nice living at it after the got enough inventory.

Long leaf pine timbers(rich heart pine) and heart cypress timbers bring serious money also.

We got the oak flooring for the house from an Amish woodworker up in Ethridge, TN. (We placed the order, made sure he had our mailing address, and waited for the letter. Took about a month.) When we were loading it up, I noticed some weathered spots on the bottom side of a few pieces, and asked about them. He informed me that the wood I was getting was some he'd salvaged from an old barn, and he thought it was hilarious that the owner paid him to tear the barn down!
