The DOD is apparently working on a nextgen machinegun design called the LSAT. Significantly(like half the weight) of an M249, the technology demonstrator is being used to show the possibilities.. Like a 15lb 7.62 SAW.. Both the gun and it's ammunition are significantly lighter.
It uses a telescoping cartridge, both "conventional" and caseless. There was a big writeup on it in the American Rifleman a month or two ago..

Wonder how that cartridge would do in a rifle...

sadly, it is not in "common use" so the government can make it illegal before it even gets produced. Which is probably what they will do to every new type of weapon technology.

I used to love how many rounds of 'naughty' I could lug around for my SAW. This thing looks like a LOT of fun.

I can see the caseless working in an open bolt system. In prior tries the caseless would not remove heat the way a brass case would and you'd get cook offs. IIRC that was in closed bolt weapons.
Maybe they've got some additive to help suck off some of the heat now.

...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

Looks like cheap garbage to me. More parts to go wrong, and I'm not convinced it can handle the torture a Joe can put it through.

Toad,
