Need a reasonable windows laptop

Post by Aglifter »

Just want it to run a, smaller, nutrition and inventory program - any suggestions?

I think it's hard to go too wrong nowadays if you buy a machine from a reputable manufacturer with reasonable specifications. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

My company issues mid-range HP laptops to everyone, and we have no complaints. Before that we used to get fairly cheap Dells and they worked surprisingly well, too.

OK, Asus was suggested to me - any thoughts? Its not much of a program - frankly, I'm tempted to try to learn "whatever it was programed in" to improve it - but its been A LONG time since I've written anything.

For 95% of computer users, any name brand laptop in the $500 to 800 range will be more than sufficient. Just keep in mind that at that price point, they are essentially disposable machines within a year.

It will be going in and out of the office each day w. me, but otherwise, all it will be used for is running a nutrition and inventory system.

(Its, essentially, a kitchen management piece, but tied in w. a database of nutrition info which is updated at times - not being left at work, solely because its theft would count as a VERY BAD THING.)

I have an ancient macbook - from '09, I think - getting rather slow these days, but still working - which I usually travel with/run all my spreadsheets on, etc.

I would toss Acer into the tier 3 vendors part... Also I would say that Panasonic should be in a class of their own, at least for their Toughbook models. Those are AMAZING if you need durability and a machine that can take a major beating.

SDPD got a BUNCH of ToughBooks for our officers years after I left the department. Even so, I've been present when cops simply tossed the machines into their trunks without care or concern about the sensitive electronics inside. They simply used them to write their reports and filed them online to the server(s) and were done with their "appliance". Granted they really weren't appliances or "dumb terminals" at the time, but they did perform the same functions with regards to various records checks and filing of reports. And these machines were pretty damned tough!!! I've seen guys pull out the laptops after riding in the trunk and the machine coming up like a desktop AFTER a pursuit which crossed curbs, lawns, fields, multiple parking lots, and other items - and they operated just fine after being retrieved from the trunk.

Many cops would simply toss them into the truck and HOPE they malfunctioned so they didn't have to do everything verifiable via computer. The older cops didn't like them, the younger cops simply viewed them as something else to deal with, and EVERYONE thought they were being spied on (regarding vehicle speed, location, position and whether or not their lights & sirens were on). LOTS of cops would simply take the batteries out until the needed the machines to do their jobs.

Panasonic makes/made an INCREDIBLY TOUGH machine, able to take the abuse by untrusting cops in the field - by being tossed into the trunk and much worse - but they CONTINUED working regardless.
