MUST HAVE XMAS etc. - Solar powered water bottle lantern

Post by SeekHer »

In an E-mail from Duluth Pack I came upon this unique device that I’ve got to get, for me and for gifts, family, friends, shooting club members etc…

If it works as described it will make such perfect stocking stuffers, B-Day gifts for campers, hunters and even for survival usage…No more batteries, white/naphtha gas, butane cylinders...cost saving and environmentally friendly--too cool!

I wonder if they’ll give me a discount if I order twenty or so? I’m going to have to find the manufacturer or distributor…I really like this idea! The maker, quote below, is a company called SOLight

“It is a ”Solar powered water bottle lantern”

From Duluth Pack:
This small, lightweight (just 2.6oz) cap fits on any ‘standard’ water bottle (2” wide mouth) such as Nalgene®, Camelbak®, GSI® and most others, turning your bottle into a solar-powered lantern. With clean, green solar energy powering your lantern there are no more burned out batteries to worry about or replace (adding to our already toxic landfills). It is also weatherproof, so don't worry about the elements harming it like they could harm batteries.
I found this info on the web from a company called SOLight who are the makers of this devilishly good device…
Quick Feature Overview
  • Fits all standard 2.25” diameter bottles, including Nalgene®, Camelbak® and GSI
  • Weighs just 2.6 ounces
  • Weatherproof

The LightCap 200 has only been available for a few short weeks, but is already generating lots of buzz in the "blogosphere."

With coverage by more than a dozen major outdoor and environmental websites within the first week of availability, it's already a great hit. Here's what just a few of the bloggers are saying about the LightCap 200:

Create Light ... Not Waste

DON’T THROW AWAY YOUR OLD POLYCARBONATE WATER BOTTLE – TURN IT INTO A LANTERN!

The last thing this planet needs is any more plastic in the landfills. But what do you do with your old polycarbonate water bottle (Nalgene or similar) that you don’t want to use any more? Don’t throw it away! With the incredibly handy LightCap200 you can turn your old bottle into the coolest home, deck, boat or camping lantern anywhere!

Just pull off the old cap and replace it with a safe, bright, environmentally-friendly solar-powered LED LightCap200 and you’ll have light anywhere you want without wasteful batteries, dangerous, toxic fuel, or electric cords.

Put one on your picnic table, deck, out by the BBQ, kids playhouse, bedroom nightlight, car safety light, cockpit light on your boat, camper, tent or anywhere else. Simply fill your bottle with water (even colored water) for a safe lantern that won’t run out of fuel or be a fire hazard. No candles to burn out, and when your bottle is filled with water it won’t tip over if the wind comes up.

The built-in light sensor automatically turns the light on whenever it gets dark, and off when there’s enough light for charging. Or you can click the water-tight switch and turn it off manually. It weights only 2.6oz and you can even use it as a flashlight. The four super-bright, white LEDs provide lots of light.

By adding a LightCap200 cap to your bottle you’re not only creating a useful item, you’re helping the environment. You can even use your bottle to store things: trail snacks, dog treats, fire starting supplies, first aid kit—anything you want to keep safe, floating and dry. And with the LightCap200 on top, you’ve always got a useful emergency light.

If that isn't recycling, I'm not sure what it is.

This appears to be along the lines of a solar landscape light.

I just love the idea of not having any more batteries, candles or fuel with me for lighting...Of course you'd have to have another light source with you as backup--just in case--but not dependent upon a landfill or toxic dump product...The "Green" sites are just loving it but so are the survival and camping and backpacking and canoe/kayak forums I visit and blogs I read...

This is what it looks like

and how it's used

In one of the blurbs the person says that it is "bright enough to read a paperback book without having to squint to make out the words." and another person said "it lit up the interior of a 4 person dome tent corner to corner."

Are you sure it doesn't have a couple ni-cads under the lid? Something is storing the solar energy until needed.

I like it, but I was referring to the AD copy telling you that you did not have to "throw away" and "fill up an already toxic landfill" your old bottle.

Idiots.

Yeah, unless you simply MUST have it fit on your old water bottle, just bone out one of these.

I wonder how well it would work if the water/liquid was frozen?

Kind of a concern up here when the bottle/lantern would have to be stored in the rucksack’s pockets for hours on end…

Might have to put some anti-freeze in?

Probably be a nice romantic, diffused light.

Sent them an E-mail asking about freezing and output and will probably hear back later today…
