I used to kill a Timex every year or two until I got my first Luminox, which lasted about 10 years before the movement apparently stripped out or something. I'm on the second one, but I still need to send the first in to be rebuilt.

I just got a new Timex to replace my old Timex, which was still going strong after 17 years when l lost it. Crystal was pretty beat, so was the ring, but it ran and ran and ran and kept good time.

Shoes? I can get 5-7 years out of a pair of Doc Martens.

In my life, the only Timex I ever killed, I had to roll a car to do it. And at that, I really only broke the crystal, the mechanism still worked fine, but the cost to replace the crystal was more than I'd paid for the watch new. I still have one somewhere from the 1950s I dug up 20 years later when my parents wanted to rip the ivy out of the front yard and put in a turf lawn. It had been older brother's, lost and left outside from circa 1955 to 1978, when I found it. Leather band was completely rotted away, watch encrusted half in and half out of adobe mud and crud. When I cleaned it off, then wound it, it worked like new. Still runs fine and keeps good time.

Currently I'm a big fan of Casio G-Shocks I get at the local sporting goods chain for about $50. I was happiest when I was making a flick on the civvie Vomit Comet, and the entire former-NASA crew observed I had the same G-shock they issued astronauts, except mine had the alarm feature they didn't get. I'm on my second one since 1990-something, and it's on its fourth band. The bands wear out every 4 or 5 years, but the local watch guys in a mall kiosk slap a new band on for $10 or so, and it's back in business. I can't lose them, and I haven't been able to break them.

I got a spiffy and spendy watch once, which broke by about Day Three when I backhanded it into a doorknob, and went back to the G-shock.
I figure they cost me about $2-3/yr. overall.

I had those years ago when they were much smaller. Now they look like a large growth that needs to be removed.

I think I've broken two watches in my life. I wear it on the inside of my wrist, which tends to protect it, but I caught the stem of my old wind-up Timex on my pants pocket and pulled it out, and I dropped one once while putting it on and broke the crystal.

I DO corrode them though. A few years ago I went to change my watch for DST and noticed half the crown was gone, just corroded away. My wife bought me a Swiss Army watch which has been great, the leather straps last me 3-4 years (as opposed to the normal $10 bands which last six months or so). I fully expect this watch to last the rest of my life.

The stem is a cheap fix. $20 around here. The crystal can be fixed, too, but I don't know if it's economical or not.

I was a kid at the time, 3rd or 4th grade. I recall some consternation over whether it was cheaper to fix it or replace the watch.

The broken crystal was a Fossil my wife gave me, and apparently you have to get a new one from Fossil or it won't fit. Got it done at a jeweler and after about a week the new crystal popped off.

The one I corroded the stem on was a Peugeot my mother-in-law gave me for Christmas one year.
