I own a Rossi lever in .357. Get the stainless steel one. The loading door needs a LOT of break-in.

Re: Help me spend my bonus
I see a lot of love for the lever gun! Only problem is it would add another caliber to my stock pile and .357 or .38 is going for more than 5.56 or 7.62.
I'm prrtty attached to the SU16. It was a gift to myself for passing the civil engineering PE exam on the first go and I have a thing for folding stocks.
Ive stumbled across the AK-74 at Classic Firearms and am interested. Ammo in 5.45 gies for about the same cost per round as .22. I could buy 2000 rounds pretty cheaply and thst is awful attractive. Opinions, please?

Rock on with the AK74 and 2000 rds. Maybe get some additional ammo while you are at it. Run a few hundred rounds through it and save 1500 or so rounds for dark-days / Social engagements.

Re: Help me spend my bonus
I finally decided on the VZ2008. Ordered it from AIM Surplus the last month and am very happy with it. I had a couple of doubts since it was a Century product and I've heard horror stories about them, but everything seems to be OK. Still waiting for time to take it to the range and see how she goes.
The deciding factor was ammo and where I shoot. I can't find reasonably priced 5.45 HP or SP, so the 74 was out. My range will kick you out permanently if you get caught with FMJ rifle ammo. I already had 2 SKSs, so feeding the brood is easier with bulk buys of 7.62x39 or even 3 boxes of HP every time I visit Academy.
My thanks to everyone for their opinions!
Now... Can anyone recommend a good 1911 for around $600-700? I turn 45 this year and want to commemorate it with a matching caliber.

Nice. I've been curious about that VZ for a long time, we want a range report.TabascoKid wrote:I finally decided on the VZ2008. Ordered it from AIM Surplus the last month and am very happy with it. Out of interest why are the range so keen on HP?TabascoKid wrote: The deciding factor was ammo and where I shoot. I can't find reasonably priced 5.45 HP or SP, so the 74 was out. I'm going to guess either insurance or FMJ penetrates plates.xyz_pilot wrote:Out of interest why are the range so keen on HP?TabascoKid wrote: The deciding factor was ammo and where I shoot. Re: Help me spend my bonus
Here's where I shoot (closest open-air range to me): http://www.eaglepeakshootingrange.com/gpsr/rules.html
They tell me that FMJ tears up the berms more than HP or SP. I'm having a hard time believing that the itty-bitty cavity in a 5.56 HP materially affects the damage it does to an earthen berm compared to FMJ, but it's their range, their rules.
They do have a problem with shots going over the berm and hitting homes in the city behind the range. The range owners claim it's people off-property using the noise of the range as cover for them shooting on private property that are responsible for the bullets landing in people's homes. I don't buy their claims, myself. They do not have anything on the rifle firing line that would prevent someone from aiming over the berm (http://www.eaglepeakshootingrange.com/g ... range.html). Compare that to the rifle line at their other range outside of Austin (http://www.eaglepeakshootingrange.com/riflerange.html). I've shot at the Leander range and you have to be really creative to get a shot over the berm there.
