Two Brothers Shot, Killed Outside D.C. Church

Post by Termite »

Two brothers were shot and killed Friday night outside a northeast D.C. church filled with worshipers who were attending a children's service, police said.

Police have identified the victims as Khalid Jamal Bryant, 24, and Jason Emmanuel Bryant, 26. The victims were brothers and lived in Northeast DC.

The slayings are the 22nd and 23rd in the District this year — a rate far greater than that in the first two months of last year....

Un-possible!! DC is a [strike]victim disarmement[/strike] gun-free zone!

Wonder if they're the normal choir boys we see in gang shootings?

Perhaps they should have been INSIDE the church (you know, standing against the back wall or along the sides) instead of outside.

Looks like more black-on-black violence, which, while deplorable, isn't news.

I deplore street violence, but until the residents of the neighborhoods are willing to do something about it, nothing will be done about it.

They make black people stand against the back walls in your church?

NO, they make ADULTS (color is NOT involved, that's something YOU added) stand against the walls for children's services, unless there's enough pews to hold them all - 'cause the service is for the CHILDREN (as if you didn't know, but just being our usual Yogi poking a stick at everything). 8-) 8-) ;)

Might be NE DC, but it's still SE of the Anacostia Freeway. A quick trip through Google Street View confirms my memory from when I last lived in in the DC metro area... it's not exactly a nice section of town. Not quite as sketchy as the section of NE on the southeast side of where Walter Reed AMC was, but not a 'nice' section of town in any case.

Generally speaking, Friday night 'childrens services' are actually teen outreach in most church communities. If this was the case there, then good on the pastor for having programs for teens. There's an unfortunate overlap with the group who the outreach effort is aimed toward, and the group that fits the 'gang-related choirboy' demographic. That whole finding the lost sheep thing... I can only hope this can help the pastor convince some of them that getting some distance from the gangs and violence is preferable to retaliation.

Also wouldn't hurt if some actual adults in the neighborhood put their foot down regarding these sort of things happening. I wouldn't advocate vigilante justice, but at some point the Police and Sheriff's dept's are just not getting the job done. It's just unfortunate that anyone willing to purge the neighborhood of the bad apples would most likely get it worse than the bad apples themselves.

Edit: Stupid me... In the age of the Intarwebz, it behooves one to check and see if places have websites. From the church's website, the "children's service" the article mentions was actually the 'Junior Choir' rehearsal. The 'choirboy' reference may not be too far off, and all I can really think is to pray for the pastor there.

They have to stand in balcony in back in mine (if by they you mean my wife and by in back you mean the choir loft with the rest of the choir)
