The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal order that does "good works" for the church. In this area, they also fry lots of fish and drink plenty of beer. They're always having a fund-raiser of one sort or another. This one is for guns. Lots of guns.
Our Sheriff likes to get in on the value as well, and regularly sells seized guns at public auction. The next one is Thursday, May 1st, at 5:30 pm. When I see other jurisdictions talk about destroying guns, I wonder why they forgo the revenue that a public auction would bring in. These auctions are normally very well attended and bring in a fairly nice sum of money. I'm told that this one will help fund new handguns for the department.
Of course, I should have twigged to the Knights. We have them back home too.
I had just that debate about destruction vs auction with the head of the Belgian proof-house. I don't know whether he didn't see sense about not squandering a vlabale resource, or he didn't feel the law allowed him to. In any case, anything seized or surrendered here officially ends up as scrap metal, if it hasn't already been surreptitiously spirited away and sold abroad - many valuable firearms simply vanished during the great gun-grab of 2006.

So clearly they don't understand that they don't hand out the guns from the trunk of the pastor's car, they deliver them according to the law from a registered FFL, and the winners undergo the same NICS check everyone else does before they take possession, right?

Rod, I've jumped in to help you a bit. It seems the Jeebus Socialists are well organized and deployed on this one. Meh, hot air. If any of them have the stones to take direct action, I don't think this demographic will result in the outcome they would hope.
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.
