Yeah, thanks, I've seen them.
Except the Blitz one was steel, and could be bolted down to a trailer fork, or in the bed of a vehicle, and survive a low speed crash without becoming an own-goal napalm strike.
The only plastic fuel cans I use are for a chainsaw, and an emergency spare for the truck, and they both roundly suck thanks to CARB.
Science marches backwards once again. I'm surprised CARB doesn't currently require all containers to be made of glass.
I'm talking to a friend who rigs FX shots for cars about getting a couple of custom fuel bladders, and mounting them inside solid steel or aluminum workboxes instead. Functional, safer than the OEM tank itself, bombproof, and invisible. Screw compliant when compliance is asinine. And my unrefueled range is CA to Dallas or Mt. Rushmore.

Hell, get a tig or mig gun, some aluminum sheeting, and make your own.

I'm familiar with welding, which isn't the same as can-do-it, and it's on my list of things-to-learn, but I'm nowhere near there yet.
But it turns out the local CC has instituted a thriving OccArts curriculum, beyond wedding planning and learning DOS, so maybe this fall...

I doubt you will find the basics particuliarly challenging.Aesop wrote:I'm familiar with welding, which isn't the same as can-do-it, and it's on my list of things-to-learn....

HOWEVER, keep this in mind: You WILL get minor burns. Just get used to that idea. It will happen. It's generally not bad, just a bit painful and annoying.

No mention of the IBC tanks? They hold 275 gallons, and can be had for cheap - like under a hundred bucks. Can be bought new from Uline for 500ish.
I think I previously mentioned the idea of plumbing one into one's lawn sprinklers using pumps and float valves, so you're constantly cycling water through them... This, of course, you have decent well/city water to begin with.
Gas/Diesel? Get a big tank - Diesel in particular. Watch Craigslist for doublewalled fuel oil tanks. They can be had cheap. Make sure it isn't rusting out on the bottom - that's a big problem with fuel tanks. If you're gonna use it for gas, get a proper vent for it.
To fill it, I'd look at one of those fuel bladders that can be used in the bed of a pickup. It's not Kosher, according to DOT for Gasoline, but if you see the price of medium to large transport tanks for Gas...

My new place is in process of being set up. I have pallet racking and a 55-gallon drum with a spigot for Kerosene, and (3) 15-gallon polymer drums. I also have (4) 5-6 gallon kegs for kerosene.
I'm thinking bout just buying flats of commercial bottled water and keeping it in the crawl space since that's the storm shelter anyway.

What temp will the crawl space reach? Plastic water bottles become unpalatable quickly at higher temps.

Good point. I need to start monitoring that this summer.Aglifter wrote:What temp will the crawl space reach? Plastic water bottles become unpalatable quickly at higher temps.
