How is it that I've never seen that before? I'm going to need to check that out, thanks.CByrneIV wrote:MAry Gentles "Grunts". An Orc henchman army gets brain and equipment dumped with an 80s era MEF. Protagonists are evolved lemurs (Lemurians) and antagonists are evolved, though not too bright, lizards (Grick.) It is notable that not only did they experience a shift in time, but also worlds. The new world is geographically very similar to the one they came from. Their maps mostly match up with the new stuff they're seeing and the names are close enough together that they can kind of communicate about locations. This allows them to take advantage of known deposits of oil, copper, etc.
Basically, super advanced war machines performing as force multipliers for a indigenous people while being zerged by lizards from the sea. It's entertaining enough and an easy read.

It's because the Japanese didn't do damage control.randy wrote: As was shown at Midway, it didn't take a lot of hits to disable or even destroy a Japanese carrier of the day. Without carriers, any launched aircraft are just drones waiting to splash, either through being shot down or running out of fuel.

And for all the ass kicking a carrier can dish out, imagine if just one Ohio class boat went back.

Honestly, given FDR 'a proclivities, and the disgusting levels of Socialism of the era (Obama is nothing compared to FDR, and Wilson...)
I think you'd see the American form of the 3rd Reich, maybe...
Send back 2014 's NSA, and I could promise that .
Not the death camps, although eugenics was certainly more popular of an idea than people like to remember.
But FDR with unrestrained power would not have been good.

And more selective use of force, it would seem.CByrneIV wrote:If we discount actual use of nukes, the carrier would have nearly as much stealth (no over the horizon sensors), and much more firepower.Steamforger wrote:And for all the ass kicking a carrier can dish out, imagine if just one Ohio class boat went back.
Yeah, an ohio, if the crew could independently retarget each mirv, would have greater gross destruction... but the carrier would be far greater effective projective force.
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.

There's also the SSGN version, with a mindboggling 154 Tomahawks. Imagine if we brought TLAM-A back out of retirement..CByrneIV wrote:Yeah, an ohio, if the crew could independently retarget each mirv, would have greater gross destruction... but the carrier would be far greater effective projective force.

Re: The Final Countdown (movie)
The Final Countdown scenario was provided in at least the Mac version or another of SSG's Carriers at War (Matrix Games has a new Windows version, but since I'm a cheapskate and Complete Carriers at War runs fine in DOSBox, I haven't bought it yet). I ran it once back in the day, and it was amusing enough in the spirit of "hilarity ensues." I threw the kitchen sink at Kido Butai...timed to arrive at 2 am. Wasn't even sporting.
Hmmm...I should see if that old Mac laptop in the basement will still boot. I still have my SSG Total War! CD, and there were some good games on it.

The biggest problems would be spares...and JP-5.

While JP5 is the carrier formulation that would be preferred, JP4 (the ground formula) would work if the carrier crews took sufficient precautions, and could be manufactured quickly given that both kerosene and gasoline were available in quantity.Mike OTDP wrote:The biggest problems would be spares...and JP-5.
Spares, yeah.
But munitions- I am assuming that bomb hardpoints for 1940's era birds are not that different than 1960's era birds; the USS Forrestal fire was worsened by antique munitions predating WWII that were being dropped on Vietnam (AN-M65s). So that means they should be usable to the Nimitz aircraft, right?
Missiles, no. Not available.
Guns- the 50 cal and 30 cal are the same, right?

Not 20mm, IIRC.evan price wrote:Guns- the 50 cal and 30 cal are the same, right?
The lack of spares would render the whole pile irrelevant in a week.
