Military aircraft

Post by Aegis »

Okay, this board is getting far too little use, so I have decided to resurrect an old thread from the previous forums.

What's your favorite military aircraft? More than one answer is perfectly acceptable.

I'm sticking with the F-14 and the F-4U Corsair, myself.

If it's a US aircraft then something Century series - F104 Starfighter or F105 Thunderchief

If I can choose from all the worlds aircraft then the English Electric Lightning

A few of mine, in no real order:

1) The B-25 Mitchell. Gotta love the first bomber to take it to the Jap homeland. And then there was it's mission of 'skip bombing'- flying low and skipping bombs off the water into various cargo ships, while flying right at the enemy AA guns.

2) The de Havilland Mosquito. Hermann Goring's least favorite airplane (as in the Brits had it and were kicking his arse), and one that the Nazi pilots got a double credit for shooting down. Fast, agile, easy to make, and very lovely. The one plane I would most like to own.

3) The A-10. When I was a kid, this is the plane I wanted to fly. Ugly, tough, with a nice bit of firepower (30mm gattling gun- waayy too cool).

4) The BUFF. Began service when my dad was a kid. Will be in service when I retire. The 1911 of bombers.

5) The AC-130. Gotta love gunships.

I'll be the odd one out. :) Since the question was favorite aircraft, and not necessarily the top one, I'll go with:

SAAB J35 Draken("the Dragon"/"the Kite")
Sleek looking, instantly recognizable from the ground looking up, so everyone could tell "that's one of ours". And so easy to maintain the hangar could be put in the woods and the Draken take off and land from roads. Also a very capable dogfighter(for it's time) and so manouverable it was used for aerial shows. (check out the video on YouTube where they do "the Cobra".)

Kind of the same feeling I get from the Spitfire, which would also be a favorite.

The good old Mossie. In 1943 Fat Herman was about to address a Luftwaffe parade in Berlin and wasn't pleased when it had to be cancelled thanks to 105 sqn's debut overhead with the Mosquito. He said " It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. The British knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is making "

Erik - I don't know if you are into flight sims, but there is a free addon Draken for FS2004 and it's a real work of art. I don't have a link, but I bet you can find it.

Mine is the P-38 Lighting. Love that twin tail and had loads of machineguns. BTW it shot down the Jap Admiral Yamamoto during WWII.
