The old saw that "America is three meals away from anarchy" is still one of those statements that holds true.

Look at how much food is on grocery shelves, peoples shelves and how it's all delivered.
Most stores get daily shipments from the warehouse, none keep anything in a back room anymore (to speak of).

Something happens. People go to the store and empty the shelves. Wouldn't take much.
No food being delivered. Hunger sets in...a meal of two is missed. Suddenly someone finds out about someone having or hoarding food and a couple people stop by to see if they want to share.
Words are exchanged, shots may be fired, and it hits the fan regardless.
Or like in the LA riots, people decide that they deserve a free vcr and tv and walk right in and take them.

It wouldn't take that much. People are stupid.

Or, put another way, "America is one good power outage away from chaos".

Only if you don't factor inflation in. If you do, the estimated 341 billion spent by the US during WW2 becomes almost 4 trillion in 2007 dollars. For FY2008, the Federal Budget was 2.66 trillion.

There could be shifts -- the JIT manufacturing idea relies on global stability -- that could become difficult.

Neither McCain or Obama would have been the man to do it, but if we had a real free marketeer -- maybe in 2010 -- it could be a great opportunity for the US. End the closed shop system, stop strangling business w. absurd taxes and regs, and be more emphatic about reciprocal free markets, and manufacturing would come flooding into the US.

Or, in my hopeless dreams, lead a global focus on individual liberty, including economic liberty, and actually establish solid economic and social fundamentals.

(Might live to see it... More of the world learns English every day -- and, for whatever reason, that has been the language of freedom since about 1500.)
And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our Fortunes, & our sacred Honor

Who knows if it will happen here but this quote is from my latest Kiplinger Letter I get each week and they have one of the best economic analysis records around.

"The global food crisis is deepening. Tighter credit is crippling farmers, especially in developing nations, making it hard for them to purchase seed, fertilizer and fuel or invest to boost production. The dollar’s appreciation also hurts, making greenback-denominated agricultural products expensive to import. That more than offsets the falling price of oil, which lowers transportation costs. The shock will hit in the spring, with weak Southern Hemisphere harvests. And industrialized nations won’t be able to provide much in the way of fresh relief. The risk of political instability will increase. Expect food riots in some parts of the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia...including even China." - The Kiplinger Letter

Bottom line for me is even if we don't see riots here prices will continue to increase so it my be prudent to buy now.

I don't think that we're actually going to see food riots, but one thing does give me pause. If it does happen, a lot of the people who don't plan for what they are going to eat beyond the next couple of days, are probably some of the same people who suddenly decided after the election that they needed guns and ammo. I worry about what they are going to do if/when they really start to get hungry, and then remember they have a brand new AR and two cases of ammo in the closet.

If they were that unprepared to begin with, I would think their rifle skills would reflect their preparedness skills... Maybe a bit a American ululating and firing into the air.

It doesn't do to broadcast your preparations too much. Of course, IMHO the likelihood of food riots is vanishingly small, and the is a lot of bad road we have to go down before that.

My thoughts too. If said individual goes feral and attempts to acquire supplies from my family, I think it might just be an opportunity to acquire an nice, new, shot little, dropped once, AR with no paperwork.

Especially if they got their firearms and tactical skills from watching gangsta rap videos and playing Halo
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".
