Car carry/truck gun/EDC

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

I wish I could find the fortitude to paint my AR like that but I am still caught up in worrying about how it would effect the resale value. What kind of paint did you use on yours CC.

As for those Sig "am braces" I saw a guy with a number of them on AR pistols last time I was at the range. He was using them like one would use a regular shoulder stock. I still can't see how those got through the ATF.

Just the one. I suppose I should get another. It's much more accurate than I expected.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

Why not? It isn't any different than one of those conversion kits for a 1911.

Me too. Problem is getting them for a reasonable price. :x

This being CA with it's pistolgrip cum detachable mag phobia an M1 carbine, Mini-14 or SKS is really hard to beat in this scenario. Not necessarily in that order of preference.

I did something like that once.

Apparently this outed me as a psycho.

This was my thought. The SKS also has that bayonet (or some models do).
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .

I agree. A Cold Steel Kukri or Kabar Kukri machete in a crossdraw Kydex sheath is "the bees knees".

Looks awesome when there's a .357 revolver on the strong side..... :D

Well... after that bit of business at Bastion, ISAF decided to take flightline security more seriously. Like, a lot more seriously. Perhaps too seriously. Perhaps... silliously? For obvious reasons, I won't go into details, but when I deployed this year, it wasn't long before they basically had us envisioning desperate last stands against a combined human wave attack made up of everyone from volley-firing Redcoats* to suicide-bombing Syrians, all desperate to destroy our Hawgs. That, combined with a nasty fuck-up period** and aircraft mysteriously seeming to lose all ability to fly (the MC-12, F-16, 747, and KC-135 crashes all within, like, a month of our arrival), generally doused anyone's sense of optimism. Lots of jokes about walking home in October, etc. So, a mere 30 rounds of 5.56 started to sound completely inadequate.

Now, I'd been to Bagram before in 2010, before all this silliness. I knew the odds of us getting into a fight were as close to zero as they could get without becoming non-zero, because they'd made a serious attempt while I was there (well, as serious as it gets from the Taliban) and they never made it past the main gate. All they did was give some SPs the chance to live the dream, and the Apaches a great chance to put on a show for the rest of us. This time, well... so far, so good. Barring a really, really lucky shot from a rocket, we were going to be just fine.

OMGHAX

Yep. Better hedge bets. An M16A2 with just 30 rounds obviously wasn't going to be enough. The British were coming. I clearly needed a backup plan. A stabby backup plan. So I ordered a Smith & Wesson boot knife off of Amazon.com in a sleep-deprived display of impulsiveness.

Had I been more awake, I would've realized the critical flaw in my plan: For roughly 12 hours of every day, it is illegal for me to carry my knife. You see, it's an "illegal tool" in the maintenance world. I might use my un-CTK'd bastard knife to fix an A-10, and we can't have that. Unperturbed, I thought, "I'll just have to stick it on my IBA," which was chilling on a shelf, waiting for me to don it in haste more often than not. So I put on my vest, found a reasonably comfortable-and-quick-to-reach MOLLE-type loop, and clipped my boot knife to it in its sheath. I then doffed the vest and put it back on the shelf, complete with knife. BRILLIANT!

So that's where the "mounting my knife upside-down on my chest" business comes in.

The psycho part comes from many instances throughout my career. Ever since Lakenheath I seem to naturally attract jokes about being the guy you want to be nice to, because some day he's going to come in with a gun and shoot everyone. For years, I was perplexed as to why this happened until a moment of clarity a couple months ago.*** But in the relevant sense, it was when the Taliban decided to fire a whole buttload of rockets in our general direction, and my flight chief noticed the knife on my vest while we sat in the bunker.

"Why do you have a KNIFE on your IBA?"
(shrug) "Eh, y'know. Just in case."
"Fuckin' psycho."

It wasn't the only time I was asked that.

"Dude, what are you going to do with a KNIFE against a ROCKET?"
"Quick-time event. Defuse the rocket before it hits the ground, DUH"****

"Why is there a knife on your vest?"
"Because I thought customs would frown on a tomahawk."

"Hahaha, oh my God Jericho, what are you doing with that thing?"
"Nothing, for now."

Et cetera.
