Maine hunter accidentally shoots part of his face off showing rifle to friends
Published November 09, 2013 | FoxNews.com
Police say a Maine man accidentally shot off part of his face while showing his hunting rifle to friends.
Chief Joseph Massey says 31-year-old Dale Poulin, from Waterville, and friends were telling hunting stories at a home on Wednesday night when Poulin brought in his rifle to show the others.
Massey says the barrel was under Poulin's chin when it discharged. He says it was an accident.
The chief says responding officers found a chaotic scene, with people screaming and Poulin's chin, teeth and blood on the floor. When police arrived, Poulin was sitting in a chair with his entire face torn off from his nose down, police told The Bangor Daily News.
Massey says alcohol was involved.
"It's one of those things where you mix alcohol and weapons and start to do very unsafe things, and you end up with a tragedy," Massey told the Bangor Daily News.
Poulin's father, Donald Poulin, tells the Morning Sentinel his son told him he dropped the rifle and it discharged.
Donald Poulin says he son has been stabilized at a Boston hospital. He can't speak but communicates by writing.

I couldn't decide where to put this, so I put it in Random for now. It's not really Protect and Defend, or Guns and Shooting, and it's not really a noteworthy event to put in History and Current Events, so I dropped it here:
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.
I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

Oh goodness. I've seen pictures of what sounds like just that injury in WWI history books. Not something I wanted to think about. I hope modern surgery can help him.

There is or was a pic over at the Gun Zone, under Darwin Award winners IIRC, showing a guy who supposedly put an M80 in his mouth and set it off. It blew his face off, everything below the nose. Not pretty, couldn't imagine living like that. And yeah, per the OP, Darwin nearly won again.

If I've had a drink, even one, I won't touch a firearm unless there's a monster at the door.
Alcohol and firearms? Rather like alcohol and driving.

This reminds me of the protagonist from Chuck Palahaniuk's "Invisible Monsters". Except for the whole "it was an accident" and "alcohol was involved".
We need a PSA with folks like this explaining safe gun handling rules...and which ones they broke to get to the way they are now.

Friends often ask me to see some of my guns after we have had a few (or more) by the fire pit or watching football. The steel door to my gun room is electronically locked and stays that way whenever booze is present.
It's really not that hard to do.
