Tablets, again

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

Tablets, again

Post by rightisright »

So my first gen iPad is starting to get long in the tooth. I primarily use it for client presentations. I'm no big fan of Apple, but at the time I purchased it Android tabs didn't have anything close screen-wise.

Things have changed. From everything I have been reading, there are a two that come close to Apple's Retina display. The Google Nexus 10 and the Asus Infinity.

Both of their lower models (less internal storage) can be purchased for ~$350. Neither of them have 4G capability. I do have a wireless hotspot (which I currently use w. the iPad).

The downside to the Nexus is less internal storage (16 GB v. 32 GB) and there is no external slot available. I don't think this will be much of an issue as I am not a "power user". I won't be gaming with it or packing it full of apps.... although 16 GB is pretty small these days...

Are there any glaring issues I am missing here?

As I stated, it will be used for client presentations, viewing my portfolio and viewing manufacturers websites. I'll also be using it in the field to view manufacturers installation pdf.s

I think you will find these questions answered in the most previous tablet threads.

I did search. Most of the info is for 7" tabs. Too small for my specific needs. While they are nice and portable, I need a large bright screen.

Ah, I see. Is there a 10" Nexus?

By that chart, the Galaxy Note 10.1 looks a bit better in every category but price - weight, cameras, RAM, processor, storage, battery life. Resolution is the same. Given that it's for business use, I'd think price wouldn't weigh quite as heavily as for personal use.

I got the Galaxy Note 8, and I really like it. I like the pen, the S software, and some of the pre-installed software (MS Office compatible word & spreadsheet software - can't remember the name) that comes with it. All that said, the only other tablets I've used are an older gen iPad and a Galaxy Tab 7. I wanted bigger than a 7, but smaller than a 10.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

Thx, Chris.

Just got back from Best Buy. They had the newest Note 10.1. The display is amazing. Unfortunately, no Asus Infinity (only online) and no Nexus 10 to ogle. They are sold out of the 10" and won't have any until the next gen comes (rumored to be made by ASUS).

Thanks for the help. Pulled the trigger on a 32GB Nexus 10.

Oh and an FYI- everyone with an Android device has MS compatible word and spreadsheet software available now, Google has made QuickOffice available for free. (Only thing I've used it for so far is as a .pdf reader, but I have it....)

Personal note I despise Apple ( worked with them in the 80s ) so the Samsung galaxy 3 8" is my next purchase , to replace my 10 " Toshiba , I am finding the 10" tab a little clumsy.

purely subjective, but I am very happy with my nexus 7 (2013).

I know it does not fit the 10" showing off pics point of the original post, but what the heck. Around here this thread has gone too long without offending someone or finding a track headed the other direction.

I should add that the 1080p screen does look damned good and might serve the purpose of showing off pics to clients, but you need to turn up the brightness which hurts battery life some.
