For it to be a destroyer, they really need to add a 5" gun and turret. You know. For tradition. Kids love tradition.

Or a Conex container.

Put. The Brownies. Down.

VSTOL? Absolutely.
Electromagnetic Cats. Maaaaaaybe. Still really not proven in Fleet use. We're just now building out first into new carrier.
Arresting gear? You really have no idea how tiny a tip of the iceberg those cross deck pennants are vs how much engineering space it takes up under the deck.
Steam Cats. Ah ha. hahahahahahahahaah
.

Agreed. In this case it's pretty clear that this is a dedicated platform for running SH-60 Seahawks or whatever the JSDF plan to use for dedicated ASW.

The ChiComs have been investing heavily into new Diesel-Electric subs. This is this Japanese telling the Chinese, we'll be watching where you go.

BTW, the second one launched last month.

You know, it's kinda hard to keep calling it a "destroyer" when you give the thing the same name as a WW2 aircraft carrier.

So, is the next ship going to be the Akagi, the Hiryu, or the Soryu?

I've got a good parking spot for them.

It's called a destroyer, because they're not allowed to have aircraft carriers.

It's why everybody is so hot and bothered for the vtol f-35 to work...

Helos are aircraft. Weird unnatural things, yes, but aircraft. It's an aircraft carrier.

Not much of a destroyer without its own guns and shipboard ASW systems.

Who knows what lurks under that deck. Perhaps an air defense UAV or vertical launch boxes of ant-air missiles. Maybe a casino to separate the Chinese from their money.
